Position Summary

The Department of Communication at Western Carolina University invites applications for a fixed-term, non-tenure-track professor of practice position with a focus in television production and broadcasting to enhance its academic program in television and digital media beginning Fall 2024.

This position will oversee the technical operation of a high-definition television studio designed and installed by Sony and teach/co-teach a limited number of classes each year providing instruction in television and video technologies and content creation processes. Responsibilities include the circulation and maintenance of field equipment used by students and faculty. Additional duties include advising broadcasting students, engaging in a limited amount scholarship and/or creative activity, and departmental, institutional, and regional service.

This is a 10-month fixed-term appointment. Expected start date is August 2023. Position includes the North Carolina state employee benefit package.

The Department of Communication offers the B.S. Degree in Communication with concentrations in broadcasting, health communication, journalism, and public relations. There are approximately 200 communication majors and minors. The department also offers a minor in communication, a minor in journalism, and serves approximately 1,500 freshmen a year in the liberal studies Foundation of Communication class that is required of all students. The department has a strong interdisciplinary focus, and provides communication courses in conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, television production, intercultural communication, and crisis communication to other university programs including programs in health sciences, social justice, international studies, environmental science, motion picture studies, and emergency and disaster management.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

This is a highly technical position and the successful candidate will be knowledgeable regarding television studio system integration, installation, and maintenance as provided by the Sony Corporation. In addition, candidates must be skilled in using high-definition television and video production computer applications for content acquisition, routing, switching, storage, and editing.

They must have experience with, and demonstrate excellent working knowledge of studio and field HD cameras, large format HD video switchers and audio consoles, audio and video routers, fiber optic video transmission, digital storage, video editing, and studio IFB and intercom systems.

Additionally, the individual should have experience with local networks for audio and video content transfer and storage. The successful candidate will have the experience and technical expertise to work remotely with equipment manufacturer's technicians to diagnose and resolve equipment issues in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for teaching are B.S. or B.A. in Broadcasting or a related field with documented national or international professional experience in video production or a master's degree with a concentration in broadcasting, communication or other compatible discipline (or a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the broadcast production discipline).

Preferred Qualifications

A PhD or MFA in the teaching discipline is preferred. Expertise in Internet distribution, social media, and new technology are highly desirable.
