Position Title Assistant Professor of Practice and Director, Teacher Residency

The Department of Curriculum and Instructionis hiring an assistant professor of practice and director of the Year-Long Teacher Residency Program. This position will be headquartered at the San Marcos campus but will work primarily in local school districts. This position is 50% FTE leading and coordinating the Residency program and 50% FTE teaching in the Residency. The term for Residency director is five years, renewable.

Primary duties related to the Residency position will be to lead and support all aspects of the yearlong residency program. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Engage in outreach with school district partners and TXST faculty to expand Residency to include additional districts and additional certification areas (e.g. Bilingual, Special Education);
  • Conduct on-going professional development for field supervisors/site coordinators, and participate in governance meetings and keep careful records of these meetings;
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between district-level personnel and Texas State University personnel involved in the Residency initiative;
  • Facilitate program development and continuous improvement;
  • Collaborate with external partners and projects such as TEA, strategic staffing with Region 13, and US PREP;
  • Maintain awareness of, and ensure compliance with, Texas Education Agency (TEA) policies and procedures as they relate to Residency, in collaboration with Texas State's Office of Educator Preparation (OEP), inclusive of program approval;
  • Coordinate the recruitment and placement of residents, in collaboration with the College of Education Undergraduate Academic Advising Center and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction;
  • Collect and maintain necessary data required for compliance, program evaluation, and continuous improvement;
  • Provide the first line of resolution for situations between Texas State students, site coordinators, cooperating teachers, and administrators related to Residency that arise on campuses;
  • Collaborate with relevant college and department leaders in achieving program goals;
  • Teach two courses in the residency each semester; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This is a 100% FTE 9-month appointment, with an additional summer stipend to prepare for the upcoming year. For these duties, the position reports to the Curriculum and Instruction department chair. All positions are subject to availability of funds.

    Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree in education or a closely related field at time of application;
  • Experience as a PK-12 teacher;
  • In-depth understanding of the Residency model or a commitment to developing that understanding rapidly;
  • A minimum of 5 years beyond entry level demonstrated experience working as a site coordinator or instructor within a residency setting or within a field-intensive educator degree program;
  • Evidence of quality teaching in undergraduate teacher education courses;
  • Engages in scholarship through professional presentations, performances, publications, or similar contributions; and
  • Demonstrates leadership in relevant professional organizations.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in education, school improvement, or a closely related field at time of application;
  • Documented, successful experience directing a year-long residency program;
  • Established networks of contacts with school district and/or campus leaders;
  • Experience working with higher education-school district educational partnerships.
