General Description / Primary Purpose
The Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of North
Florida invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor
position in Graphic Design and Digital Media to begin in August of 2022.
The University of North Florida's Department of Art, Art History, and Design
is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools
of Art and Design. The Department comprises six major areas of undergraduate
study: Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Digital Media,
Painting/Drawing/Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. The Department
expands learning opportunities for students and provides professional
enrichment for faculty and staff through a partnership with the Museum of
Contemporary Art in downtown Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF. In
addition, the Department maintains an extensive permanent teaching collection
of approximately 500 works by world-renowned artists.
The Graphic Design and Digital Media (GDDM) program is a competitive
limited-access BFA program of study that prepares students for professional
practice in visual communication. The curriculum emphasizes design process and
principles, technical skills and production methods, and research-driven
problem-solving that considers social impact as well as commercial potential.
Coursework focuses on print publications, branding and identity programs,
typographic design, packaging, UI/UX, and screen-based experiences
The GDDM program seeks a graphic design professor to teach a combination of
foundation-level design and specialty courses. The ideal candidate will be
enthusiastic about working with pre-majors to help them develop the
fundamental skills necessary for success and advancement in the GDDM program.
They will bring their own creative experience and professional expertise into
the classroom, and will be dedicated to integrating new technology into the
curriculum in innovative ways.
In addition to teaching, the candidate must show ongoing excellence in
research, scholarship and/or creative activity. The ideal candidate will
demonstrate an outstanding approach to their own creative research through
projects, writings, lectures, and other creative activity. Service to the
department, college, and university is expected.
Teaching: Course load is a 3/3 with an opportunity to teach in the summer
Research/Scholarship: Faculty is required to develop a research and scholarly
agenda which is outlined in the departmental guidelines.
Service: Faculty is required to serve on university committees, local,
national, international boards, professional organizations and/or other
service to the community.

Faculty Position Required Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have an M.F.A. degree or terminal degree in Graphic
Design or related field from an accredited institution in graphic design or a
related field at the time of appointment in August of 2022.
Expert knowledge of design principles, typography, layout, and process—in both
print and digital media—is required as demonstrated by a creative portfolio.
Demonstrated experience with practicing, teaching, or researching in two or
more of the following areas: typography, publication design, identity design,
motion design, interaction design, UI/UX design, art direction, social design,
design research, or data visualization.
Candidates must show evidence of advanced technical and production skills
using the most current Macintosh operating system, Adobe Creative Cloud, and
other design-related software. Excellent communication, collaboration, and
organization skills are essential. Applicants should be current on standard
Adobe CC applications and relevant web prototyping tools. A working knowledge
of printing, bindery equipment, sound and lighting equipment is a plus.

Required Licensure or Certification
The ideal candidate will hold an MFA from an accredited institution in graphic
design or a related field, two or more years of college-level teaching
experience or graphic design industry work experience, and a background in
motion, UI/UX, web, application, interaction or emerging media design.
