POSITION: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION: SPECIAL EDUCATION (TENURE TRACK)

Overview:

The Education Department at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA invites applicants to join an innovative department in a liberal arts setting offering undergraduate and master degree programs. We seek applicants who are committed to diversifying the teaching force and preparing dedicated special education teachers who are enthusiastic about leading efforts to improve practices in identification, intervention, and inclusion. Our department strives to break barriers to educational access, teach openly about the role of the individual in social change, and work towards cultivating more open approaches to non- dominant cultures/races/orientations; we encourage candidates to apply who have a similar social justice orientation. Our university serves a high population of first-generation college students and transfer students.

Successful candidates should be committed to excellence and innovation in undergraduate/graduate teaching, working closely with traditional and non- traditional students in a small college environment with a commitment to student success, and active engagement in scholarly activities. Grand View's Commitment to you: Grand View provides an intentional mentoring and support program through our Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). New faculty are paired with experienced faculty as a component of an intentional induction program. Faculty in the Education Department collaborate on a regular basis to ensure that the program is preparing teacher candidates to engage in the K-12 schools of the 21st century as innovative, culturally responsive advocates for their students and colleagues.

Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will be expected to teach a range of courses in a variety of modalities, including in-person, blended, online, and at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

  • Academic responsibilities include: teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses; student advising/mentoring, providing departmental, college, university, and professional service; and maintaining a research agenda.

  • Candidate will oversee the Special Education endorsement which includes: staying informed about changes and requirements for the endorsement at the state level. This oversight also includes supporting, advising, and coordinating curriculum and adjunct professors teaching courses in Special Education.

  • Candidate will mentor and supervise practicum students and student teachers in K-12 special education classes.

  • Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Education field, or a strongly related field, with an academic specialization in Special Education from an accredited institution. Doctoral candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Required K-12 teaching experience serving students with behavioral, intellectual, and/or learning differences.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates are preferred to have at least four years of successful teaching experience at the K-12 level.

  • Prior successful teaching at the post-secondary level and/or mentoring of new teachers is desired.

  • Special education program administration, advising, and supervision or mentoring experience preferred.

  • Iowa Instructional Strategist II endorsement(s) preferred (or equivalent)
