The Department of Communication and Performing Arts at the University of the Virgin Islands invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track, teaching position in Public Relations and Strategic Communication at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in August 2022. The successful candidate will teach lower division courses in communication and public relations and develop/or restructure courses to match industry needs. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching 12 hours a semester. Specific duties include teaching, advising and general administrative responsibilities. The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching within a comprehensive state university, engagement in student and university service, and the promise of scholarly achievement. In addition to teaching media skills and public relations techniques to undergraduate students, the candidate must be able to teach 100- level Communication courses. The candidate will also help advise UVIABJ, the student chapter of NABJ. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach all pr classes at the undergraduate level. Other duties will include promotion and marketing of the Communication Division on a local, national and international level.

Essential Functions

1. Teach courses in Liberal Arts to include but not limited to Public Relations, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, etc. 2. With the help of other communication faculty, act as a liaison with other departments in this interdisciplinary major. 3. Demonstrated familiarity with multiple delivery systems, including blended, online, and distant learning formats. 4. Demonstrated familiarity with advising students in undergraduate course programs and in application for graduate programs and employment opportunities. 5. Experience working with diverse populations or demonstrated understanding of diverse populations. 6. Familiarity with developing academic programs. Provide department service, including student organization assistance and sponsorship. 7. Provide university service, including committee work. 8. Creative/scholarly research in academic field. 9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in communication or related area.

Demonstrated success or evidence of potential to excel in teaching and advising undergraduates

Ongoing scholarly productivity, and institutional and departmental service in addition to teaching Theatre to undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. preferred

• Distinguished record of achievement in the areas of media/ communication

at the regional, national and/or international level.

• Teaching experience-3-5 years beyond grad assistant university level.

• Demonstrated capacity for effective student engagement/recruitment

• Collegial attitude • Strong organizational, management, verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Demands

While performing job duties, employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, reach, and lift up to 20 pounds.
