Position Summary
Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept
About Art Practice We offer undergraduate (BFA) and graduate (MFA) degrees in contemporary art practice. Art practice is the exploration of art experiences and processes with an emphasis on developing a student's creative vision.
Our Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art practice provides students with the knowledge and skills designed to prepare them for a fulfilling career as a practicing artist. It's a flexible degree that allows students to design an individual path of study based on their interests and goals. We strive to acquaint students with fundamental concepts while nurturing their own unique vision.
Our faculty are all active makers as well as forward-thinking student-centered educators. Students begin the program by exploring a wide range of ways to engage, communicate and create as an artist. This interdisciplinarity is at the heart of our program. Students also have the opportunity to dive deep into an area of study, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, social practice, textiles, and time-based arts such as film, video, sound, and performance art. We are also leaders in the field of Art + Social Practice, which focuses on collaborative experiences and interaction between the artist and cultural systems through activism and social engagement. These programs take place in the city, in neighborhoods or connect students with other institutions. One example is KSMoCA, a contemporary art museum in the Martin Luther King Elementary School in northeast Portland.
