The Department of Physics at Syracuse University is seeking applicants in the field of Mechanical Metamaterials. The opening is for a tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor, although exceptional senior candidates will be considered, and will start in Fall 2022. This position is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in the broad area of BioInspired science and technology. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University is actively recruiting multiple candidates for tenured/tenure-track faculty positions for a cohesive research cluster in the focus areas of Smart Materials. Faculty hired into this position will build on our existing strengths in the focus areas and affiliate with a newly formed multidisciplinary BioInspired Syracuse Institute for Material and Living Systems that spans multiple departments in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Further information on the Institute and hiring initiative can be found at https: // We are particularly interested in candidates working within the focused areas of Smart Materials with initiative to enhance collaboration and promote world-class interdisciplinary research to quantitatively understand complex biological systems, and rationally design programmable smart materials to address grand challenges in health, medicine, and materials innovation.


A completed Ph.D. in a relevant field of study or the expectation of completion of the Ph.D. by October 2021 is required. The Physics Department is committed to professional development for junior faculty, and provides excellent mentoring and support.

Job Specific Qualifications

Applications are solicited for the broad research area of mechanical metamaterials. Researchers with interests that align well with current expertise at Syracuse in active matter, phase transitions in biological materials, biophysics of cell signaling and ion channels, extreme mechanics, or programmable materials are particularly welcome. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Physics or a related field. We are interested in candidates who have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to be effective with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members. Candidates from groups historically excluded in physics and/or experience in mentoring students from these groups are particularly encouraged to apply.


The hire will be expected to establish a successful research program and to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty service assignments, such as committee service, are expected as well. Faculty hired into the BioInspired Institute cluster will have access to the Institute's junior faculty mentoring network, internal funding opportunities, and public outreach resources. Additionally, graduate student and postdoctoral trainees may participate in our extensive Professional Development Program.
