General Statement

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Montana State University invites applications for a full-time tenure track position with primary responsibilities in teaching, research and service/outreach. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the program. Duties will include teaching courses in mechanical engineering, working on curriculum development, developing a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, and participating in professional/service activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, develop a nationally-recognized externally-funded scholarly program in an appropriate focus area, produce scholarly works and collaborate with MSU's research centers and regional partners. Other responsibilities include advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in accreditation activities and committee assignments, and providing service to the University, State, and profession.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or closely related field by start date. 2. Record of quality peer-reviewed or other scholarly publications. 3. Excellent potential for effective undergraduate and graduate teaching in M&IE. 4. Excellent potential for developing a nationally-recognized, externally- funded scholarly program in an appropriate focus area. 5. Excellent potential to engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Academic/professional experience. 2. Research program that complements and expands current M&IE Department research programs and directions. All outstanding candidates in the general area of Mechanical Engineering will be considered, but preference will be given to applicants working in the areas of thermal and fluid sciences, which include but are not limited to energy systems, heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics, thermal and fluid transport processes, turbo machinery and steam generators, optical diagnostic techniques, fuels development, characterization and modeling, combustion modeling, renewable energy, energy storage, energy conversion, electronics thermal management and HVAC. 3. Demonstrated ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the M&IE programs. 4. Promote the advancement of diversity.

    The Program The Department

    The M&IE Department offers ABET accredited BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Industrial & Management Systems Engineering. A degree in Financial Engineering is also available. Graduate offerings include MS degrees in Industrial & Management Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering with options in Applied Mechanics, and Industrial and Management Systems Engineering. The Department is strong in both traditional and emerging areas of each discipline, with substantial laboratory facilities supporting instructional and research missions. Available to M&IE Department faculty are collaborations with MSU's Energy Research Institute, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Imaging and Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Magnetic Resonance Lab, Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Microfabrication Facility, Western Transportation Institute, Wind Application Center, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, Thermal Biology Institute, and the Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory.

    The College

    The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering comprises five academic departments – Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Gianforte School of Computing, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, and is home to Army and Air Force ROTC Units. The College enrolls approximately 3,700 students with more than 200 studying in graduate degree programs. Doctoral degree programs include Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Materials Science. Further, the college offers a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in Applied Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

    With a wide array of research programs in progress, MSU engineering faculty and students have garnered an impressive number of awards. In recent years, MSU engineering students have been recognized with a number of prestigious awards, including Rhodes Scholarships, a Marshall Fellowship, a Gates- Cambridge Fellowship, as well as Goldwater scholarships and NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. The Norm Asbjornson Hall (NAH) was completed in Fall 2018 and this innovative facility has transformed engineering education and scholarly activity at MSU.
