The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers University's School of Communication and Information invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Digital/Online Platforms and Marginalized Communities. We seek candidates in this area focused on production, circulation, political economy, and/or online sociality and civic engagement, with an emphasis on power, politics, culture, race, and/or identity.

Some examples of (but not limited to) the types of scholarship that would fit the call include:

- Popular culture, digital media culture, and/or content creation

- Legacy media transformation in the digital age

- Youth and digital media

- Digital media activism and social change

- Techno-social practices of social media, video-based or immersive platforms, and/or influencer culture

- Social, political and/or cultural implications of algorithms or artificial intelligence

- Surveillance studies

- Disinformation, conspiracies or hate speech online

- Critical approaches to data infrastructures

- Inequities in access, uses, and outcomes of technology

- Social inequality and democratic participation

We are particularly interested in scholarship that focuses on these areas in relation to historically marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ+, Latinx, Black people, and other underrepresented groups.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of tenure-track faculty members include undergraduate and graduate teaching assignments, an active program of research in the candidate's area of scholarly expertise, and service contributions in accordance with the university policy for tenure‐track and tenured appointments.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field as of June 2024 and should have a demonstrated record or strong likelihood of top-tier peer-reviewed publications and evidence of effective teaching.

Faculty in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies have doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, including communication, journalism, mass communication, sociology, history, political science, anthropology and other areas. We study the operation of media at local, national, and international levels, and our research methods range from humanistic to social scientific.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to receive an updated (bivalent) vaccine dose.
