Job Description

The School of Art & Design at Marshall University seeks applicants for a full- time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will teach three undergraduate courses per semester in a variety of graphic design areas. Responsibilities will also include teaching design principles and Adobe CC in the Foundations area, mentoring students in research and creative activity, supporting student design internships, area management, and maintaining scholarly/creative design research. Additional related duties include academic advising, curriculum development, and service to the institution and community. Uniquely located in the Tri-State area, the School of Art & Design is housed in two separate facilities dedicated to Art Education, Art History, Ceramics, Fibers, Foundations, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Faculty teaching in all disciplines are committed to providing students with a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages both conceptual and aesthetic innovation. Specifically, the Graphic Design area prepares students for a career in the design field by emphasizing client- and community-based practices, requiring internship experience, and mentoring students in AIGA and other professional activities. Required Qualifications

Applicants must have an MFA in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, New Media, or related field by the time of appointment. Alternatively, applicants who have an MA with three or more years of relevant industry work experience are eligible to apply. The qualified candidate will be an energetic educator and collaborator, and will demonstrate effective communication and problem solving skills. Demonstrated knowledge of traditional design principles and theory, along with contemporary issues/emerging platforms in visual communication is required. Familiarity with typography, print design, and graphic design history is also expected. Applicants must be fluent in Mac OS, Adobe CC, and other industry-standard design software.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have college-level teaching experience in a rigorous studio art and design environment and/or a record of of client-based, industry experience. Preferred applicants will demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas: print design, web design, application design, information design – IA/UI/UX, brand identity, data visualization, creative coding, or illustration. Interest in team-taught studio art Foundations courses and evidence of commitment to student recruitment/retention are desired. The university places a high priority on candidates who can contribute to the general education curriculum with core courses designated as community-based learning and critical thinking.
