Primary Purpose of the Position

The position is a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Social Work in the Department of Social Work in the School of Health Sciences (SOHS) with a start date of

August 2022. The primary responsibility of this role will be to serve as Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Field Director. Job responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing BSW Field Education Program.
  • Maintaining relationships with current placements and finding new ones (within North Carolina and throughout the state if needed).
  • Maintain and become fluent in using the Exaat platform and serving as a point of contact.
  • Keeping track of field documents (i.e., learning contracts, articulation agreements, timesheets, etc.)
  • Teach 2-3 courses a semester.
  • Primarily responsible for site visits each semester.
  • Serve as faculty advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside the classroom
  • Producing scholarly research that results in publication in peer-reviewed journals within the Social Work discipline or within journals that promote the teaching and learning of Social Work
  • Facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences
  • Engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Participating in departmental, college, and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

    Faculty in the Department of Social Work seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in serving as director of the BSW undergraduate Field Education Program and serving students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The following qualifications and skills are required for this position:

  • Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in social work (or related field) from a four-year regionally accredited institution.
  • Candidates must have an MSW from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited university (licensure is also preferred) with at least 2 years post-Master's experience.
  • At least two years of teaching experience at the baccalaureate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process.
  • Evidence of situating undergraduate candidates in undergraduate research experiences or experiences engaging students in study abroad, internship opportunities, or community engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability of participating in interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations at the university, across universities, or within the broader community.
  • Evidence of research and scholarly contributions to the Social Work discipline.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity in a diverse educational community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences.
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills along with effective interpersonal skills.

    Teaching, Advising, and Field Experience Supervision

  • The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Social Work using face-to-face and online methodologies.
  • Provide leadership and direction of field practicum and leadership in community outreach programs.
  • Provide engaging and relevant assignments for students with learning outcomes applicable to the field.
  • Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, timelines, and an approved syllabus.
  • Integrate “high impact practices” in their instructional delivery
  • Complete grade books, mid-term, and final grade submission learning assessments, and final exam assessments on a timely basis, and respond to student questions in a timely manner.
  • Engage in effective student academic advising throughout the academic year.
  • Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • Must have an active research agenda.
  • Conduct and maintain an active line of scholarly research within the Social Work discipline that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate with interdisciplinary teams to procure sponsored research that advances the research agenda.
  • Must facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national, and international professional conferences and meetings within the healthcare management discipline.

  • Attend consistently departmental and College meetings.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community.
  • Collaborate with community stakeholders and other professional organizations.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
  • Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions relative to Social Work.
