FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-three colleges within the dynamic City University of New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

The Department of English at Medgar Evers College invites applicants with experience in Composition and Rhetoric to apply for an Assistant Professor position. The candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to initiatives that improve student success in first-year writing courses, general education courses, and persistence towards degree completion. Responsibilities include teaching composition, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise as well as responsibility for department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions. They will also develope programs related to composition, mentoring students, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees; the candidate is also expected to be actively engaged in research and to produce a significant body of scholarship.

The Department of English seeks candidates dedicated to developing a strong composition program, to mentoring students, and to actualizing a research agenda. The successful candidate will have expertise in teaching composition. Candidates must have a commitment to the educational mission of Medgar Evers College. Additional years of full- or part-time teaching in higher education and demonstrated success in teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds will be an advantage.

Appointment to this position will begin in Fall 2023.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

Earned PhD, or equivalent, in Composition and Rhetoric, English, or closely related field; at least two years of successful college composition teaching experience. Demonstrated research agenda in the field of Composition and Rhetoric, English, or closely related field.

Demonstrated experience of mentoring students, developing curriculum, working with writing programs or centers, incorporating technology in the teaching of writing, including digital and multimodal literacy, and/or teaching general education courses offered through the Department. The candidate's pedagogy should be student-centered and informed by current scholarship in composition and rhetoric, or related area. Evidence of presentations and publications in the field and a robust research agenda will be an advantage. An additional area of expertise in transnational African diasporic literature is welcome.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with education and experience
