Description of the Department or Unit
HAYES SCHOOL OF MUSIC: The Hayes School of Music consists of 410 music
students and 50 full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in music
education, music therapy, music industry studies and music performance with
concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory/composition
and sacred music. Graduate degrees are offered in music therapy and music
performance (with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music
theory/composition, conducting, and a graduate certificate in music theory

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching load to include: Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra,
Orchestral Conducting, conducting lessons with graduate students, courses
related to orchestral students in the music education degree program including
String Orchestral Techniques and Literature, and supervision of student
teachers and practicum students. Administrative duties include: Coordination
of orchestral activities with applied music faculty, coordination of
orchestral activities with the instrumental and choral ensembles, oversight
and management of orchestral area budget and resources (including
instrumental inventory and ensemble library), and representing the Orchestral
Area on the Dean's Advisory Council. Additional Activities: Participation in
Hayes School of Music entrance auditions, recruiting to support the Orchestral
Activities, and supporting and informing public school string programs.
The orchestral activities area at the Hayes School of Music is a vital
