Job Summary:

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice has approximately 500 program students and offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, an Honours program, and a Master of Arts (Criminal Justice) degree for criminal justice system professionals. The School is home to the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research and houses a secure Crime Lab that facilitates faculty engagement in a wide range of criminal justice research opportunities. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is committed to the collaborative development of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and university and community service. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing instructional excellence in every class for every student, creating experiential learning and practical opportunities for students beyond the classroom, and contributing to the betterment of UFV, the communities we serve, our partners, and our discipline.

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position to begin August 1, 2024. We seek applicants who have knowledge and expertise in a wide range of criminology and criminal justice areas such that they can teach across our undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Successful candidates will also bring areas of expertise that expand upon the current expertise of faculty in the School. Some examples of areas that will complement existing expertise include Canadian criminal law, corrections, and Indigenous Peoples and the Canadian criminal justice system. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice encourages applications from candidates who are Indigenous or members of equity-seeking groups.

We are seeking collegial, energetic, and innovative individuals who have a recent record of successful post-secondary teaching and who are able to effectively mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in applied research and scholarship that involves collaboration with the local community, community agencies, and/or external bodies or agencies. Successful applicants will be expected to actively participate in departmental and university activities, service, events, and initiatives, and ongoing professional development is required.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must have a PhD in Criminology (other related disciplines will be considered) or a JD/LLB with substantial recent professional experience in Canadian criminal law. Candidates who are ABD and provide evidence that they are close to completion will be considered.

Successful candidates must have strong theoretical, conceptual, and applied knowledge of criminology, Canadian criminal justice, and/or Canadian law and legal institutions.

As UFV is a teaching-oriented university, successful candidates must have recent evidence of at least one year of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. In addition, they must employ an inclusive and decolonized pedagogical approach in their teaching and communicate effectively and respectfully with others, including Indigenous and racialized students.

The successful candidates should also have experience in technology-supported teaching (e.g., hybrid, online) and the potential for an active research or scholarly portfolio, preferably in an applied area of Canadian criminal justice.

Interested candidates should submit the below through the online portal:

  • a cover letter.
  • a curriculum vitae.
  • statement of teaching philosophy.
  • copies of all recent teaching evaluations.
  • a one-page summary of short- and long-term intended research or scholarly activity.
  • contact information for three referees.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of reference at time of interview.

Applications will begin to be reviewed October 15, 2023, for an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024.
