About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, nearly 15,000 credit students choose from 12 bachelor degrees and 36 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

About the Department of Child Studies and Social Work

The Bachelor of Child Studies program is housed within the Department of Child Studies and Social Work, in the Faculty of Health, Community and Education. With a progressive approach to studies that focuses on children and youth, Mount Royal University's distinctive four-year program emphasizes experiential learning in early learning and child and youth care. The program provides a theoretical foundation and valuable hands-on learning opportunities in and outside the classroom. Going beyond traditional program offerings, the Bachelor of Child Studies focuses on creating experienced, well-rounded graduates who are prepared to become strong advocates for children, youth and families, or pursue further education at a graduate school level. Mount Royal University is proud to deliver the only four-year Bachelor of Child Studies degree in Western Canada. The degree offers two majors; child and youth care counsellor and early learning and childcare. Our Faculty provides a teaching and learning environment that welcomes challenging ideas and our program is committed to anti-oppressive practice. About the Role

The Child Studies program within the Department of Child Studies and Social Work, Faculty of Health, Community and Education at Mount Royal University invites applications for a Tenure Track faculty role which will commence July 1st 2022.

The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Child Studies with majors in Early Learning and Child Care and Child and Youth Care Counsellor. The successful candidate for this position will possess strong knowledge and familiarity with Early Learning curriculum frameworks and pedagogies; anti- bias curriculum design and practice, Indigenous ways of knowing, and demonstrate teaching skills in play and emergent curriculum, child development and practicum supervision. Candidates could teach the following:

  • Candidates will have a proven commitment to decolonization and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion practice including knowledge and experience of working with diverse communities.

  • Preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous or other racialized groups, as well as other priority populations,
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are able to teach across the program,
  • Preference will also be given to candidates who have an emerging record of academic publications directly related to Early Learning and Child Care practice.
  • A PhD in a related discipline is preferred; a Master's degree is required. The successful applicant must have previous post-secondary experience and be qualified to teach courses within the first two years of the Early Learning and Child Care major as well as senior courses in the degree. Must have five years of experience working in Early Learning settings. Further responsibilities include course and program development. Must be eligible to be certified by Alberta Child Care Staff certification through the Ministry of Children's Services of Alberta and be a member of the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Alberta.

    New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service only.
