Position Description

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of the Pacific invites applications for three (3) tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2024. The Department of Biological Sciences is part of the College of the Pacific, the liberal arts core of the university. Our mission is to provide a superior, student-centered learning experience integrating liberal arts and professional education and preparing individuals for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities. The College of the Pacific is located in Stockton, California, named as the most racially and ethnically diverse big city in the United States in a 2020 US News & World Special Report. Tenure-track and tenured faculty members engage in in-person teaching; scholarly and artistic endeavors; and provide professional and university service in accordance with their school bylaws and university policy.

Teaching duties: two courses each semester and may include coordinating a teaching laboratory. Teaching responsibilities could be various combinations of courses depending on the candidate's background and areas of interest. Greatest current teaching needs include:

  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Techniques
  • Area of research specialization is open. Candidates are expected to develop a laboratory-based research program that engages both undergraduate and master's students throughout the academic year. Additionally, candidates are expected to actively pursue extramural funding.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in biology, or a closely related field, prior to the start date.
  • Demonstrated potential for sustained high-quality teaching.
  • High quality and current publication record in area of research interest.
  • Enthusiasm for working with a diverse student body.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest and ability in teaching a breadth of biology courses, with preference for courses listed above.
  • Previous experience mentoring undergraduate and/or master's students.
  • Research program that complements current programs in the department.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.

    Job requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

    Work Environment/Work Week/Travel: Schedule is dependent on department need.

    Hiring Range $75,000-$77,000 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Special Instructions
