Assistant Professor – bioinformatics in advanced therapy medicinal products

Scientific Context The division of Drug Discovery and Safety aims to uncover molecular mechanisms that define drug efficacy as well as to promote the development of advanced novel therapies. Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) encompass revolutionary new drug types including gene vectors, gene editing enzymes, somatic cells, stem cells and more. The development of ATMPs requires new safety, quality, manufacturing, and risk assessment research areas. Because ATMPs comprise of living cells, and / or induce permanent genetic modification of living cells, the genomic state and its phenotypic output is of critical importance for ATMPs. Important research approaches include development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines and algorithms for transcriptomics, genomics, genomics-karyotyping, identification of potentially tumorigenic mutations, high-throughput characterisation of single cells and bulk populations of ATMP cells, in vivo tissues treated by ATMPs, and combinations thereof. This translates to ATMP risk assessment by omics technologies, and hypothesis driven research towards the phenotypic outcomes and complex ATMP- tissue long-term interactions e.g. months and years. In particular, human induced-pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) is an emerging ATMP discipline involving cells undergoing drastic phenotypic transformations i.e. reprogramming, differentiation, necessitating high-throughput characterisation of cell types related to embryonic differentiation and tissue physiology.

Key Responsibilities The assistant professor will scientifically contribute to the above research in the division and actively contribute to the scientific excellence and publications, including senior author publications. The candidate will support and guide both undergraduate, Master's, and PhD graduate students with their bioinformatics-based investigations, be involved in the coordination of BSc and MSc programs of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences teaching modules, totalling to approximately 50% time effort. The candidate should contribute to the acquisition of research grants, and is expected to further develop a successful research line and 3rd party funding in close relation to the overall objectives of the research program. The candidate will actively partner with a large team of assistant professors within the LACDR.

Selection Criteria

  • A PhD in molecular/cellular biology with a focus on cellular transformation
  • Strong bioinformatics development and tool deployment competence
  • A several years of experience as a lead bioinformatician
  • Enthusiastic and ambitious about ATMP and hiPSC therapies
  • Strong independent abstract thinking skills, hypothesis driven bioinformatics, and outlining research narratives in scientific writing and presentation
  • Expertise in advanced bioinformatics technologies
  • Previous experience in teaching, student supervision, and course development
  • Excellent scientific – publication and grants, writing skills
  • Soft skills to supervise undergraduate and graduate students

    Terms and conditions We offer a full-time, 1 year term position, with the possibility for a permanent employment based on performance. Salary range from € 3.974 to € 5.439 gross per month (pay scale 11, depending on experience) , in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
