The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering (MME) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (https:// engineering.unl.edu/mme) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of additive manufacturing of metals, ceramics, polymers, or biomaterials.

The UNL College of Engineering is undergoing an exciting period of significant growth, and is poised to move into a new ~$80M research facility and a new $100M teaching and learning building. A major focus of the college's teaching, research and outreach enterprise in the coming decade is on developing manufacturing science and engineering, including the manufacture of equipment, devices and components. To this end, we have established the Nebraska Engineering Additive Technologies (NEAT) lab (https: // engineering.unl.edu/NEAT/) which houses multiple additive manufacturing capabilities. Consequently, the College is seeking to hire a multidisciplinary group of faculty with complementary expertise to profoundly impact the field.

This position calls for candidates with demonstrated expertise in additive manufacturing. Specific areas of interest include: (1) adaptive capabilities for customization and rapid deployment of new processes; (2) printing of new and multifunctional materials, including composites, ceramics, and spatially tailored materials; (3) sensing, monitoring and computational modeling of material structure-process-property phenomena at multiple length scales; (4) predictive tools for characterizing process behavior and fabricated product; and (5) hybrid processing schemes involving additive/subtractive, laser treatment, etc. We seek innovative and inspirational scholars with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, service and engagement.

The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering consists of approximately 35 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 700 undergraduate students, and 110 graduate students. In addition to manufacturing, faculty research priority areas include energy, materials science, nanoengineering, and biomedical engineering. An outstanding infrastructure exists for conducting research, including central facilities housing state-of-the-art instrumentation within the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience (https: // ncmn.unl.edu/central-facilities) and the Nanoengineering Research Core Facility (https: // engineering.unl.edu/nercf/), which comprise the NSF- funded Nebraska Nanoscale Facility. Collaborations across disciplines are encouraged, especially with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and through the various state- and federally-funded research centers and programs on campus such as the Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior, Center for Biotechnology, and the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field.

Candidates must show demonstrated expertise in specific areas of interest, including: (1) adaptive capabilities for customization and rapid deployment of new processes; (2) printing of new and multifunctional materials, including composites, ceramics, and spatially tailored materials; (3) sensing, monitoring and computational modeling of material structure- process-property phenomena at multiple length scales; (4) predictive tools for characterizing process behavior and fabricated product; and/or (5) hybrid processing schemes involving additive/subtractive, laser treatment, etc.

Applicants must have a record of strong scholarly achievement in the field of additive manufacturing and the potential to establish a strong externally- funded research program, as well as a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in the fields of manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to contributing to a culture that supports diversity and inclusion.
