The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of
ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK) IN SOCIOLOGY
The employment relationship will start on January 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of an Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an Associate Professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model). At the end of the fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (Associate/Full Professor).
Tasks and qualifications
The position will be located in the field of sociology at the University of Jyväskylä, the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The main research areas of sociology are sociology of consumption, economic sociology, digitalization, environmental sociology, research on age and life course and civil society research. In addition to teaching and research, sociology as a discipline plays an important role in societal interaction at local, national and international level.
The main duties of the Assistant/Associate Professor include active research work, acquiring external research funding, and launching and implementing research projects. In addition, the duties include teaching under- and post- graduate level courses and supervising theses at bachelor, master and doctoral levels in sociology. The Assistant/Associate Professor is also expected to participate in stakeholder collaboration and other activities in the university community.
The qualification required for the position is a doctoral degree in the relevant field. Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research in the research fields described above. We also value high-level, international research and publications, strong methodological competence, success in acquiring external research funding, experience of managing research projects or involvement in research projects, working in a multidisciplinary research environment and, finally, experience of supervising and teaching international students. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are considered an asset.

Please note that candidates for the position of the Assistant Professor must have completed a doctoral degree within the last nine years and have postdoctoral research experience in Finland and/or abroad. Special circumstances (e.g. maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave and childcare leave, military service / non-military service, or long-term illness), extend the nine-year rule accordingly.

What does the University of Jyväskylä offer as an employer?
The University and the Department will support new Assistant/Associate Professors in forming a research group and implementing the research plan. New Assistant/Associate Professors can also apply for Rector's starting grant.
The salary is based on the job demand level and the employee's personal performance, in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The annual salary of an Assistant Professor is approximately 46 000 – 57 000 EUR and of an Associate Professor approximately 53 000 – 66 000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
