Position Summary

The position, located within the Department of Natural Resources and Society (NRS) is a nine-month, tenure-track position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Natural Resources Policy with an empirical research portfolio in policy or governance, with an applied focus on policy solutions for managing forests, rangelands, and/or wildlife. The position will work closely with the Policy Analysis Group, which was established by the Idaho Legislature in 1989, and serves as the primary research agency of the State of Idaho on natural resource policy issues. The Group's work serves to help public agencies “better reach more informed decisions regarding the wise use of Idaho's forest, range and wildlife resources, including fish, wildlife, timber, water, outdoor recreation, forage and aesthetic values.” This position can use a range of methodological approaches to social science and will also contribute to teaching and advising, and to the University's land grant mission. The position will work closely with current faculty and groups in NRS and the College of Natural Resources with expertise in sustainable rural communities, collaborative resource management, or resource governance in Indigenous or historically marginalized communities.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in an appropriate field by time of hire (e.g., Public Policy, Environmental Studies or Environmental Sciences, Human-Environment Geography, Rural Sociology, Human Dimensions of Natural Resources)
  • Evidence of ability to develop and conduct a program of scholarship in natural resources policy and management
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level, including online course delivery
  • Established record of excellence in teaching and mentoring
  • Established record of effectiveness in research and service
  • Record of successful grant writing
  • Promoted with tenure to the rank of Associate Professor
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in natural resource issues in Idaho and the Western United States
  • Applied research focus on policy solutions for managing forests, rangelands, and/or wildlife
  • Expertise in sustainable rural communities, collaborative resource management, or resource governance in Indigenous or historically marginalized communities
  • Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
