About the Role

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS) is a part of the Faculty of Arts and comprises of History, Philosophy, History and Philosophy of Science, Classics and Archaeology, The Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and The Program in Jewish Culture & Society. SHAPS offers a wide range of subjects in these disciplines and has a large Honours and postgraduate student cohort. This position resides within the Classics and Archaeology Discipline and report to the Discipline Chair.

The School seeks to appoint an Assistant Lecturer in Ancient Languages (Teaching Specialist) with a passion for teaching Latin. The incumbent will thrive in teaching level 1-3 classes and will work closely with the discipline chair and classics colleagues. The role will be responsible for coordination of subjects in accordance with the Faculty's Local Operating rules and will also be responsible for all administrative tasks associated with the delivery and assessment of specified subjects and the development of subject teaching materials.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and teaching of intermediate and advanced-level Latin subjects, as advised by the head of discipline
  • Undertaking consultation with students in relation to readings, weekly topics, assessment and skills development
  • Coordinating the teaching activities of specified subjects to the standard of the Faculty and in the mode of delivery required (e.g., online, classroom, blended)
  • About You You will have a strong record of teaching experience in a tertiary environment in a range of teaching delivery modes (online, classroom and blended). Your excellent interpersonal skills and passion for teaching will ensure that you deliver high quality teaching and support to students and form productive relationships with both academic and professional staff colleagues at all levels of the organisation.

    You will also have:

  • A PhD in Classics or cognate field
  • Demonstrated successful tertiary study in the relevant discipline and relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum and subject material development
  • Experience in managing and supporting staff and fostering an effective teaching team
