Position Information

Position Title Assistant Director, Office of the Ombudsperson

Requisition # S01153P FLSA Exempt Location IIT-Mies Campus (MC), 10 West 35th St., Chicago Department President's Office GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the President of Illinois Institute of Technology, the Office of the Ombudsperson is an independent, impartial, informal, and confidential resource for faculty and staff at Illinois Tech. The primary responsibility of the Ombudsperson is to serve as a resource for individuals and groups at Illinois Tech, when approached, by advising them on the appropriate avenues and individuals who can best help address their concern. The Assistant Director will support the University Ombudsperson by monitoring incoming emails, responding directly to emails as appropriate, conferring with the Ombudsperson on requests that will require a virtual meeting with the Ombudsperson. In the case of a situation where a meeting is required, the Assistant Director will schedule the meeting between the individual or group reaching out and the Ombudsperson.

The Assistant Director may manage some inquiries to the Office of the Ombudsperson directly. For example, many inquiries may be fairly simple questions that require directing the individual to the area of the website that addresses the person's concern or to the best person or department. There might be follow up requiring the Ombudsperson's direct involvement, but managing through initial inquiries will require a blend of providing helpful information and directing people to resources, but keeping the door open so that if the individual wants to reveal additional concerns, they do so, and then the Assistant Director can pull the Ombudsperson into the interaction. The Assistant Director will monitor emails for questions from students and will forward these to Melisa Lopez, the student ombud.

The Assistant Director will assist in keeping track of the concerns and issues that come to the Office of the Ombudsperson so that themes can be identified. This is critical because once there is an identified them, the Ombudsperson can engage other groups such as Human Resources and General Counsel on developing a strategy that addresses consistent and prevailing concerns without ever breaking the confidence of an individual person engaging in discussions with the Office of the Ombudsperson.

The Assistant Director may assist the Ombudsperson in developing reports and presentations for use in senior leadership meetings and university townhalls.

The Assistant Director may assist the Ombudsperson in other responsibilities outside the Office of the Ombudsperson specific to the Ombudsperson's continue work with DEI and other initiatives at Chicago-Kent School of Law.
