The Department of Applied Ecology performs teaching, research, and extension in the biological and ecological sciences. The Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (SE CASC) focuses on climate and other global change sciences to help fish, wildlife, ecosystems, and people adapt to a changing climate.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director of SECASC position is to provide high-level program management and coordination support for the SE CASC. This position serves as the primary point of contact with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for budgeting and works closely with the National CASC on various initiatives. The Assistant Director also takes a lead role in developing and implementing the biennial Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Symposium.

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Administers SE CASC research, capacity building, and communication programs;
  • Monitors and tracks all SE CASC budgets and metrics, including pre-award functions such as project budget and scope of work development for NC State PIs, as well as post-award activities by acting as the single point of contact for the university and the USGS grant management requirements;
  • Manages and oversees all communications for the program including final proofing and approval of the monthly newsletter, websites, and interface with the Data Steward, and mentoring of the team of communication interns;
  • Builds relationships across the university and with Consortium institutions throughout the Southeast and also nationally and internationally;
  • Develops materials to broadcast goals, mission, and results/impacts;
  • Develops and maintains project database and tracking;
  • Coordinates the regular webinar series;
  • Facilitates meetings with Working Groups, Project Leads, Federal Scientists, and other stakeholders;
  • Facilitates conversations and engagement with the Federal SE CASC Director and Deputy;
  • Participates in research and engagement meetings;
  • Coordinates annual reporting as required by the funding agency;
  • Provides support to the Global Change Research Fellows, including reviewing applications of potential candidates, guiding, mentoring, and assisting in the graduate student's research, presentations, and interactions with other researchers at a regional and national level;
  • Represents the SE CASC in all National CASC meetings relevant to the Assistant Director;
  • Represents the SE CASC at regional and national meetings;
  • Provides annual support and operations for the National Atmospheric Deposition Program National Trends Network.
  • The position supports four federal staff; over 170 faculty affiliates, five Consortium Institutions, and 12 Global Change Fellows per year. Interacts regularly via conference calls, workshops, and training with other regional CASC Assistant Directors, Directors, and Federal Directors and Deputies.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Relevant Bachelor's Degree with at least three years of relevant experience;
  • Experience working with budgets and developing budget justifications;
  • Experience working with a regional or national Climate Adaptation Science Center.
  • Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to coordinate and manage research and education/outreach program, writing and editing technical reports for non-scientists, website design and social media technology, MS office Suite.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Ecology, Forest Ecology, Climate Science, or a related field;
  • Experience in project management and communications;
  • Exemplary organizational skills to develop ideas, proposals, analysis mechanisms, project tracking, and other activities;
  • Some experience with climate change science and/or policy.
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid Driver's Licence or the ability to obtain a NC Drvier's Licence within 60 days of hire. The position will need to drive on occasion to regional science symposiums and events.
