Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field. Minimum of eight years' experience in one or more of the following areas: sports, reporting, sports information work, sports news, data, general news, and information services. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Performs specialized professional journalistic and public relations in promoting and publicizing intercollegiate athletic programs at Sam Houston State University.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists management in directing media services for all Sam Houston State University (SHSU) sports. Compiles and disseminates weekly news releases to media outlets for all of Sam Houston State University's varsity sports, highlighting upcoming events. Provides game results to media after every Sam Houston State University athletic event. Delivers news releases to media concerning activities within the Sam Houston State University athletic department, such as new hires, schedules, student-athlete signings, and promotional events. Supervises media interviews with Sam Houston State University coaches and student-athletes. Compiles, edits, and disseminates statistics for Sam Houston State University (SHSU) varsity sports. Prepares weekly statistical reports of each team for coaches and media. Reports statistics to Conference USA and National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for regional and national statistics compilations. Provides or coordinates content for Sam Houston State University (SHSU) athletic website. Updates the website for intercollegiate sports on a daily basis with the goal of having up-to-date results and statistics on the web within twenty- four (24) hours after the event. Collaborates with coaches and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) athletic staff to maintain accurate schedule information on the web. Produces and oversees content creation for athletic publications, including annual brochures, reports, and team features within athletic game programs. Coordinates press box and press row at all Sam Houston State University (SHSU) athletic home events. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Engages with faculty, staff, and students throughout the campus community. Maintains connections with external coaches, players, and various members of the news media off-campus. Must be knowledgeable of all National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and conference rules. Must adhere to National Collegiate Athletics Association and conference bylaws. Must be supportive of institutional compliance and academic programs. Must report all National Collegiate Athletics Association and conference violations to proper personnel.
This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
