Job Location Raleigh, NC Department Department of Population Health and Pathobiology About the Department

The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department's faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.

North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. With the graduation of its first class in 1985, the CVM is one of the younger veterinary programs in the country. Despite its relative youth, the College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked among the top 5 of the nation's 28 colleges of veterinary medicine in the yearly U.S. News & World Report survey.

Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.

The college is committed to practicing inclusivity, making community a priority and promoting innovation. We embrace effective leadership and we champion personal and professional growth.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology has an exciting opportunity for a Assistant Clinical Professor to join the College of Veterinary Medicine community. As a clinical education-focused member of the anatomic pathology group, the majority of the candidate's activities are expected to center on excellence in autopsy and surgical biopsy services, and clinical teaching.

The successful candidate will enhance existing diagnostic capabilities and develop specialized diagnostic pathology expertise in an organ system, species, or disease category and related molecular diagnostic testing. Through their service contributions, this candidate will have a sizable impact on our successful anatomic pathology resident program. Teaching commitments will include core DVM pathology courses (general pathology, systems pathology, infection, and immunity), anatomic pathology senior clinical rotations, electives, and graduate training in the CBS Pathology concentration.

Pathology expertise in poultry or swine pathology would complement existing Departmental teams but expertise in other areas is also sought. Collaborative research will ideally enhance existing areas of research within the Department and College. Current areas of departmental research include the pathology of infectious diseases, infectious diseases of food animals, viral and respiratory diseases of poultry and swine, musculoskeletal diseases of poultry, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of zoonotic pathogens as related to antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease including Clostridium difficile, Salmonella and E.coli and toxicology and pharmacokinetic studies.

The Department of Clinical Sciences also has a robust research program in companion and exotic animal diseases. The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences has complementary strengths in regenerative medicine, neurosciences, development and genomic approaches in cancer. Other areas of interest include the development of diagnostic tests for use in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

The remaining time will be committed to professional/university service.

The position will include mentorship of undergraduates, graduate students, interns and residents.
