Assistant/Associate Professorships in Natural Language Processing

The Computer Science Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for faculty positions in natural language processing at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The proposed starting date is March 2024 or soon thereafter.

The Computer Science Department seeks to conduct research and education that are both foundational and have impact on industry and society.

The candidate

We look to hire candidates holding a PhD in computer science, computational linguistics, or a closely related field.

The candidate is expected to complement the existing natural language processing group and to conduct research and research-based teaching in one or more of the following areas:

  • Natural language processing
  • Machine learning
  • Generative artificial intelligence, large language models
  • Social and ethical aspects of generative AI
  • Computational linguistics and psycholinguistics
  • Language-oriented data science
  • The ideal candidate should document:

  • Peer-reviewed publications in areas covered by conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL/EACL/AACL, COLING, LREC, ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, AAAI and their collocated workshops and journals such as TACL, Computational Linguistics, JAIR, JMLR or TMLR.

  • Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is well received by students.

  • A record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which they have worked as well as serving one's own research community, for example participation in committees, etc.
  • In addition, candidates for a position as Associate Professorship should be able to:

  • Attract external research funding
  • Supervise PhD students
  • Be willing to learn Danish (for applicants who cannot speak a Scandinavian language)
  • It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying degrees, for example because of differences in countries and research fields.

    Job description

    The candidate is expected to conduct research and to collaborate with fellow faculty members in the Computer Science Department, especially its NLP group, and to develop interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaborations when relevant. The candidate is expected to contribute to the IT University's education programs, both by giving courses and by supervising BSc and MSc theses. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage with society through external collaboration, to participate in securing external funding, and to contribute to the IT University's strategic goals.

    General information

    The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

    About the Computer Science Department

    The ITU Computer Science Department conducts research in all aspects of computer science and data science, including natural language processing, algorithms, databases, government IT, machine learning, network science, optimization, programming languages, quantum computing, robotics, security, semantics, software engineering, software verification, type theory, and more, as well as a range of applications. The department has 55 permanent faculty, 65 PhDs and postdocs, as well as other staff. It is responsible for the IT University's most technical education programs BSc Software Development, BSc Data Science, MSc Computer Science, MSc Data Science, and MSc Software Design.

    Salary

    Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Taxation's agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

  • For the position as Associate Professor: preferably documentation of both a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position

    The applicant will be accessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 13 March 2012.

    The IT University may use shortlisting in connection to the recruitment process. In case of shortlisting, the Chair of the hiring committee selects applicants for assessment in consultation with the hiring committee after the application deadline.
