Located in Winston Salem, UNCSA is a conservatory-style school and one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The university community consists of more than 1,200 students ranging from middle school to graduate school. The school of Design & Production is one of the five collegiate level training programs (along with Drama, Dance, Music and Film). The school has 367 students, 32 full time faculty and 12 adjuncts. Wig & Makeup has both a graduate and an undergraduate program, with 39 students currently enrolled, and one of 12 different concentrations offered by the School of Design & Production. Students serve as wig and makeup designers/technicians on productions in Drama, Film, Music, and Dance, as well as other campus and outside community events.
Position Summary
The three full time faculty in the Wig & Makeup program work closely with the students to ensure their educational progress, both in the classroom and the production environment, while also maintaining professional activities outside of the institution.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
- Teach courses within the Undergraduate and Graduate Wig & Makeup program in the School of Design and Production
- Mentor and advise student Wig & Makeup designers throughout the production process, including during tech and filming on nights and weekends
- Assist in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students during on-campus and virtual interview dates
- Continued professional activity within the entertainment industry – Active participation in shared governance of the University community through service to the program, school and institution – Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Design and Production
Required Qualifications
-An earned terminal degree in the teaching discipline or related discipline. Equivalent professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience will be accepted in lieu of the academic degree.
-Evidence of work that incorporates and supports a diverse clientele
-Evidence of potential for a high quality of teaching
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience in the entertainment industry, including, but not limited to: professional or regional theater, film, television, opera, tours, cruise ships, wig shops, or prosthetic shops
- Desirable skill sets that can include, but are not limited to: period and modern hair styling, ventilating, custom wig building, cage building, Cosmetology license, period and modern makeup application for stage and film, prosthetic makeup application, sculpting, mold making, digital or hand rendering
- Experience in the classroom and/or mentoring and supporting developing artists and technicians
