Primary Purpose of the Position

The position is a Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor, in the School of Health Sciences Division of Nursing with a start date of July 2022. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate nursing courses with a concentration in the specialty area of adult health. In addition to teaching and facilitating the application of nursing theories, principles, and skill competencies, the candidate will serve as a faculty/student advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside of the classroom; producing scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of nursing; facilitate presentations at well-respected professional conferences; engage in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams; participate in departmental, School, and university service as well as engage in service relative to the nursing profession and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County communities.

The Division of Nursing seeks exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching nursing theory and clinical to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and who demonstrate the ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process. The successful candidate will mentor and support undergraduate students in the research experience and/or engage students in study abroad, internship opportunities, or community service learning where they must leverage their content knowledge to benefit the larger community. Preferred candidates must exhibit the ability to engage in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, and research collaboration with the broader constituencies. Candidates must show a commitment to liberal education , diversity , equity, social justice, and social determinants of health in inclusive environments. The successful candidate must exemplify a commitment to their professional growth and development and engage in professional organizations and conferences.

We welcome candidates who are proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Canvas, and Banner platforms. Candidates must have a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctoral degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates must have a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina (or eligibility to obtain a North Carolina Registered Nurse license), a minimum of three years of clinical experience, and a minimum of two calendar years of teaching experience, in the face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line learning environments in a university setting. Candidates must be proficient in test construction using the NCLEX blueprint, statistical analysis, and remediation. The successful candidate must be a clinical expert and possess effective communication and assessment skills.

Division Preferred Years of Experience, Skills, Training, and Education

Candidates must have a Master of Science in nursing from an accredited college or university and a doctoral degree in Nursing or a related field. Candidates must hold a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina or have eligibility to obtain North Carolina Registered Nurse license. The preferred candidate must have a minimum of three years of clinical experience in adult health/medical-surgical nursing and two calendar years of teaching experience, including hybrid and/or online, in a college or university setting. Preference will be given to candidates who hold national certification in medical-surgical nursing and/or are certified, nurse educators.

Required License or Certification

Current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina is required (or ability to obtain licensure). If an Advanced Practice Nurse, candidate must have national certification.

Faculty in the Division of Nursing seeks a committed and engaged faculty member who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:

Teaching and Advising:

  • The successful candidate will teach undergraduate nursing courses either face-to-face, hybrid, or online and must communicate with students as s/he monitors student progress for student success.
  • General teaching responsibilities include both didactic and clinical/lab instruction, primarily teaching curriculum content related to adult health at the undergraduate level.
  • The faculty will advise and mentor students regarding academic matters and help foster a student-centered learning environment. Consistent with the tripartite mission of the university,
  • The successful candidate must develop detailed course syllabi prior to the first class, teach each class section as assigned, create and present relevant course activities, assess assignments by providing written and/or oral feedback in a timely manner, and evaluate student performance.
  • The successful candidate must hold office hours each week consistent with university requirements, meet with the course coordinator, area coordinator, and chairperson regularly and as requested, and attend departmental, School, and university meetings as appropriate.
  • The successful candidate is expected to engage in scholarship through evidence-based practice or research and service activities at the division, school, university, and community levels.
  • The successful candidate will engage in the procurement of external funding and perform other duties as assigned by the associate dean of nursing and chair of the undergraduate nursing option.
  • Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • The ideal candidate must have a research agenda.
  • The ideal candidate must produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals in the Nursing discipline or yields publications focused on the teaching and learning Nursing in higher education.
  • The ideal candidate must facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national and international professional conferences and meetings within the discipline.
  • The ideal candidate should engage in procuring sponsored research with interdisciplinary teams.
  • University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement

  • Meet with the course coordinator, area coordinator, and chairperson regularly and as requested
  • Attend consistently departmental and College meetings.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on College- and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
