The faculty of St George’s University School of Medicine, Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, are dedicated to upholding the mission which is, ‘To cultivate and disseminate public health knowledge and practice through an integration of education, research and service in collaboration with communities and partners’, and in so doing achieve the vision of a ‘Competent public health workforce, building healthy communities’.

All faculty are expected to contribute to the public health knowledge, skills and professional behavior and training of the students in the MPH and MD program.

Essential Functions

Instructional Activities:

Design content and Deliver lectures in following SOM courses:

MPH Program:

  • Principles of Biostatistics
  • Data Management and Analysis
  • Intermediate Epidemiology
  • Research Methods

4-year MD Program

  • Basic Principles of Medicine 3 - Biostatistics

Associated Tasks

MPH Program

  • Develop course resources and learning materials for effective instruction in face-to-face as well as online settings.
  • Meet and communicate with students via regular on-campus office hours, emails and discussion fora.
  • Upload content, organize and oversee content on the Course Management system (Sakai) as required).
  • Analyze large data sets and set up data management systems for evaluation purposes.
  • Provide statistical support to faculty both within the department and throughout the university
  • Engage in course directorship, lecture planning, preparation and delivery
  • Actively engage students using creative and innovative strategies via a dual delivery platform.
  • Evaluate student work and provide constructive feedback to enable their personal growth and develpment.
  • Be familiar with program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain studetn academic records e.g. course scheduling, academic and career advisement.
  • Mentor students on their Capstone Integrated Learning Experience (CILE)projects/papers.
  • Collaboratively design and build competency-based assignments with faculty to support the development of the track and program.
  • Identify needs and develop resources and initiatives to enhance student performance.
  • Work on special projects and tasks as assigned by the Epidemiology Track Director or by the DPHPM Chair.

4-year MD Program

  • Support as required, the Module Coordinators, Course Directors and Content Managers of the 4-year MD program courses supported by the department.
  • Meet and communicate with students via regular on-campus office hours and via email.

-Supplemental Teaching

In addition to teaching in the core courses for the MPH program, faculty will be required to support departmental teaching in the MD program and the pre-medical program as well as the Integrated Team Instruction delivery of the MD program – a small group-based curriculum delivery. This includes:

  • Development of higher order learning objectives using Bloom's revised taxonomy.
  • Development of USMLE-style clinical and experimental vignette-based assessment items.
  • Contribute to small group teaching, laboratory sessions, case-based, problem-based or team-based learning, and interactive multiple-choice question sessions.

Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Actively engage in a research  in a relevant area
  • Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students
  • Contribute to curriculum review and innovation.
  • Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department. 
  • Actively participate in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Education/professional development.
  • Collaborate with local and regional organizations.


Participate in the following University activities:

  • Faculty Senate
  • Departmental Reviews (as required)
  • Faculty Meetings (as required)
  • Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Chair of the Department and/or Dean)
  • Administrative roles, as assigned by the Chair of the Department and/or the Dean
  • Outreach efforts in the local community.



  • A doctoral degree in Biostatistics or Epidemiology or Public Health with a biostatistics specialization or
    MD and MPH in Biostatistics or Epidemiology.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience teaching in higher education.
  • Strong record of publications and ability to access funding.
  • Experience advising students on research.
  • Experience analyzing data sets.

Desirable Qualities:

  • Certification in Public Health
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrable commitment to the education of public health and medical professionals
