Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Established in 1891, North Carolina Agricultural and Technological State University is the largest Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) in the nation. With an enrollment of over 13,000 students, N.C. A&T offers 58 baccalaureate degrees, 29 master's degrees, and 9 doctoral degrees, consistently graduates the largest number of African Americans in the state of North Carolina and is nationally recognized as a leader in STEM education and research, graduating the largest numbers of African Americans in engineering and agriculture. NC A&T has a strong legacy of social justice, activism, and community engagement and is well-known for the four freshman students, often called the A&T Four or the Greensboro Four, who in 1960 sparked the civil rights movement in the South through their “sit in” at Woolworths near campus.

Building on N.C. A&T's legacy as a HBCU dedicated to exemplary teaching, scholarship and effective public service, the College of Education is a learner-centered academic unit where faculty members are committed to the preparation of future educational leaders committed to equity, access, and advocacy. The College of Education comprises three departments: the Department of Counseling, the Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education, and the Department of Educator Preparation. The Department of Educator Preparation at North Carolina A&T is comprised of professional educators and faculty committed to teaching and learning. Our faculty provides high quality programs to our students through research, effective teaching, field experiences, internships, and ongoing formative assessments as students prepare to be educators. More specifically, the department utilizes practice-based teacher education (PBTE) approaches to prepare our teacher candidates and leverages our three A&T affiliated schools: The STEM Early College at NC A&T and The A&T Four Middle College at NC A&T high schools, and our STEAM laboratory elementary school, Aggie Academy, as sites for continued cycles of teacher learning, preparation, and research.
