The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at Old Dominion University is seeking applicants for a tenure track faculty position in the broad area of Space Systems Engineering. Any specialty area within this umbrella will be considered, including mission design with single or multiple satellites, payload and instrumentation development, propulsion technology, small satellite systems, planetary exploration, vehicle dynamics, entry systems and thermal analysis, communication and telemetry systems, etc. An appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor is anticipated although strong candidates may be considered at the Associate Professor level.

The candidate should have an excellent record of development and teaching of courses in the relevant areas to undergraduate and graduate students, in addition to a record of research accomplishments. Appointment can be made at the Associate Professor level for a more senior candidate with a proven record of accomplishments in teaching and research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop new courses and labs in the areas related to materials, manufacturing, space craft propulsion, or thermal sciences with applications in space systems. The candidate should also be capable to teach general core undergraduate in mechanical/aerospace engineering. In addition, they are expected to contribute to existing research and service activities in the MAE Department and to establish collaborations with government agencies, industry, with other departments at Old Dominion University and with other universities.   • Collaborate with, and support the activities of, the Virginia Commercial Spaceflight Authority, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, NASA Langley Research Center, NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, the National Institute of Aerospace, and regional industry in the space sector
  • Development of a strong externally funded research program is essential.
  • Support undergraduate and graduate teaching, including supervision of student design teams, spacecraft/space payload research, and to oversee an on-campus Space Systems laboratory
  • Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

    Possess an earned PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
