Title Assistant/Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture (Environmental History)

School Harvard Graduate School of Design Department/Area Landscape Architecture Position Description

A junior faculty position is available for highly qualified individuals to offer graduate-level instruction in environmental history. Housed in the Department of Landscape Architecture, this is planned as a full-time tenure track position.

Candidates should be creative emerging researchers who have demonstrated an innovative historical approach to narrating and theorizing familiar and/or previously overlooked objects, subjects, topics, and themes within or beyond the traditional bounds of art-, architectural-, urban-, design- or landscape- history. The candidate will be expected to make substantial scholarly contributions to the field while at the same time continuing to define it with respect to past and future possibilities and practices within landscape architecture.

Teaching responsibilities include a comprehensive course on the history of the environment—considered as an evolving concept and an inhabited condition—in the modern era. The successful candidate will also offer research-based seminars in their area of specialization to students in the professional, PhD, and other degree tracts.

Teaching responsibilities also involve engagement in the Department of Landscape Architecture's core curriculum, including “Climate by Design,” which explores responses to the climate crisis including adaptation and mitigation, and with design studios through guest critiques and project reviews.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates are required to hold a PhD in the history of landscape, art, architecture, urbanism, environmental or ecological humanities, history of science, STS, critical geography, or related fields.

This appointment, expected to start in Fall 2022, is expected to be a full- time position at the level of assistant or associate professor. We will review applications on a rolling basis starting on September 1st, 2021. Candidates should upload a letter of interest, current CV, a teaching statement and a research statement, a Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging statement, and two or three significant works such as articles or book chapters.

Additional Qualifications Special Instructions

For the required statement of teaching philosophy, please describe your pedagogical approach, including how you would approach teaching students across disciplines and departments in the context of design and/or planning education, in no more than two pages.

For the required statement of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, please address the following question in no more than two pages:

Given the geographic diversity represented in the GSD community, and our commitment to anti-racism and inclusion, how do you approach pedagogy and mentoring for a student cohort that is diverse across multiple dimensions including but not limited to nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, and gender identity?

Candidates should submit names and contact information for a minimum of 3 referees. Candidates will be notified regarding requests for recommendation letters during the short list phase of the recruitment process.

Applications will be reviewed beginning September 1, 2021.
