Minimum Qualifications

Requirements include an earned doctoral degree in speech-language pathology or a related area.

For an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, candidates must demonstrate the potential for effective teaching, student mentoring, and conducting research in the area of expertise.

For an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must demonstrate a history of successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, student mentoring, and research productivity.

Candidates who are ABD are eligible to apply; however, all requirements for the degree must be completed by September 15, 2022. All qualified applicants will be considered.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

Applications are particularly encouraged from candidates with expertise in the areas of child language disorders, autism, literacy, cultural-linguistic diversity, and/or complex communication needs.

License/Certification Required

Ideal candidates will be eligible for ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence and North Carolina licensure.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, and is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). In addition, the Department is home to the Charles and Geneva S. Scott Scottish Rite Communication Disorders Clinic, which provides speech, language, and hearing services as an outreach to the community and serves as the primary location for student clinical training. The Department emphasizes involvement in the areas of interprofessional education, clinical-academic collaboration, and diversity and inclusive excellence. The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is located within the Beaver College of Health Sciences. The Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is the second largest college at Appalachian State University with around 3,700 students served by 150 faculty and staff. Committed to interprofessional innovation and collaboration in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach, the BCHS is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities we serve. In 2018, the College expanded to include the Holmes Convocation Center and Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a new, state-of-the-art 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college is home for the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, both face-to-face and online, conducting research and seeking external funding, and engaging in university and professional service. Opportunities for direct clinical service and clinical supervision may also be available.
