Chief Objective of Position
Supported by the Andrew W. Ross Visiting Artist Legacy Fund, the Department of
Art's artist-in-residence program invites one artist, scholar, or educator to
campus each year. The program culminates with an exhibition at the Radford
University Art Museum; a research lecture; and/or an educational program in
the spring semester. Candidates at any career stage that work in any relevant
media or discipline are welcome to apply.
Funding is provided to support housing and living costs. For regionally-
located candidates, it is possible to commute, but relocation is preferred to
meet the expectations of the program. To supplement the stipend, candidates
may elect to teach in the department as adjunct, pending availability. Adjunct
faculty supplement the full-time faculty by teaching courses which are
necessary for the department but for which instructors may be lacking. The
goal of adjunct positions is to facilitate our ability to meet the growing
needs of the department in this area.
Artists-in-residence are expected to produce research or creative scholarship
on campus; interact with students and faculty through workshops, critiques,
and/or guest lectures; and contribute to departmental culture. The selected
candidate gains access to facilities including studios, libraries, archives,
and galleries and may choose to work at Selu, Radford's 380-acre nature
conservancy with retreat center, observatory, classrooms, and labs. Other
responsibilities and resources may be arranged to fit the selected candidate's
skillset and aspirations.
If selected to also teach, adjunct instructors can contribute to one or more
of the department's four programs: studio art, graphic design, art education,
and art history and museum studies. Possible teaching choices include:
professional practices, foundations, art appreciation, or special topics.
Other opportunities may exist, depending on the department's scheduling and
the candidate's skillset.
