Job Description:

Oversee and serve as project manager for a diversity of advanced analytical chemistry projects. This includes the design, coordination, management and conduction of sample preparation and clean-up methods supporting laboratory chemical and/or biological analysis using a variety of techniques including liquid-liquid, solid-phase, high-pressure extraction methods. Conduct analysis of soils, sediments, water, and/or air for environmental contaminants using specialized advanced instrumentation including GC, HPLC, GC/MS, LC/MS. This can include chemicals found in crude oils/petroleum products. 30%

Oversee the laboratory quality management system including the development and updates to laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory methods and processes. Update laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control Plan. Ensure laboratory equipment and processes are compliant with the QA/QC plan and in the spirit of compliance with Good Laboratory Practices and laboratory accreditation (e.g. ISO) standards. Maintain records and conduct quality control checks for compliance. 30%

Conduct literature searches as appropriate to support research efforts and write short reviews of existing methods to summarize results of literature searches. 20%

Oversee and supervise specialized laboratory advanced instrumentation and ensures that they remain in working order to support research efforts. Provide supervision and training to multiple users. Maintain general laboratory cleanliness and ensure laboratory consumables are in-stock. 15%

Write progress reports for sponsoring organizations, publications of research findings and presentation of results at scientific conferences. Other duties as assigned. 5%

Minimum Qualifications

-Master's in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, or related field with 1 - 2 years of experience

-Experience working in an environmental research laboratory, and the use of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Experience with environmental regulations and issues, and good laboratory practices

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, or related field with 1 - 2 years of experience

-Experience with advanced instrumentation (GC/MS, LC/MS, MS/MS) and method development (extraction and clean-up) for the trace analysis of contaminants in environmental matrices. Experience working in an environmental research or regulatory laboratory under QA/QC procedures.

Special or Physical Qualifications

This position is subject to random drug/alcohol testing in accordance with PS-67. A valid Driver's License is required.
