Project/Unit Description

Support the United States missile defense research efforts performed within the Air and Missile Defense Division (AMDD) of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). As part of our Ballistic Missile Defense System Capabilities Assessment team, you will be joining a multidisciplinary group that assesses system performance through analysis of test event data (simulated and collected), focusing on tracking, sensor resource management, sensor fusion, engagement planning, and battle management. Team members use the knowledge they gain through system assessment to assist with resolving design uncertainty in system integration. The work for system assessment and system integration is impactful and helps improve and advance missile defense. As an Algorithm & Analysis Engineer, your responsibilities could include algorithm evaluation, data analysis, data management, documentation review, and tool development.

Job Purpose

Responsible for the development and support of state-of-the-art algorithms involving to data fusion, sensor fusion, machine learning, manned/unmanned avionics improvement programs, and genetic programming. Algorithm engineering focuses on the design, analysis, software/hardware implementation, optimization, profiling and experimental evaluation of computer algorithms, bridging the gap between algorithm theory and practical applications of algorithms in software engineering. Statistical analysis of multi-modal and time-varying data to characterize and quantify system qualities and deficiencies, resulting in recommendations and development of improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design data cleaning and analysis strategies, proposing new tools and modifications to existing paradigms.
  • Design and execute algorithm tests, providing oversight to others.
  • Lead algorithm design discussions for entire studies.
  • Architect overall algorithms with detailed system and integration considerations.
  • Lead technical report execution and provide oversight to others.
  • Lead discussions with sponsors for studies.
  • Serve as technical lead for small projects at customer sites, providing guidance to others.
  • Lead technical execution and writing for sections of journal articles and conference presentations, and literature searches for finding new avenues of thought and bodies of work to explore.
  • Serve as mentor or leader to students, including co-ops, GRAs and others through Institute programs.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Review documentation and gain in-depth knowledge of a component of the missile defense system
  • Perform analysis of data collected from different test events
  • Develop new tools and help maintain existing tools for data analysis and management
  • Prepare presentations of results and brief to team members and to stakeholders
  • Participate in technical interchange meetings and attend design reviews
  • Document design understanding, identify areas of design uncertainty, and confirm resolution of design uncertainty in support of system integration
  • Required Minimum Qualifications
  • A strong mathematics background that would include probability theory and statistics (common in many of the engineering & science fields)
  • Experience with Matlab or C programming languages
  • Experience with radar or IR sensors
  • Experience creating technical briefs and presenting them
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience working with and evaluating data collected by radar systems during test events
  • Experience with tracking algorithms and track performance metrics
  • Experience with sensor fusion approaches
  • Travel Requirements
