Colorado State University recently launched AgNext a first-of-its-kind collaborative to support profitable, sustainable, and healthy livestock production. AgNext is a leader for research in animal and ecosystem health while enhancing profitability of the supply chain and serves as the crossroads for producers, industry partners, and researchers to come together to innovate real time solutions for sustainability animal agriculture. Our research focuses on advancing the science of animal agriculture to ensure a continued safe, secure, and nutritious food supply. Our mission is to identify and scale innovation that fosters the health of animals and ecosystems to promote profitable industries that support vibrant communities.

Position Summary

The position will lead independent research related to the sustainability of livestock systems. Such research will span a breadth of expertise and focus around translating theoretical science to scalable systems level adoption. PhD is required, including knowledge of concepts in experimental design and data analysis across livestock systems. Organizational skills, personnel supervision, group coordination and capabilities in producer outreach and engagement will be necessary.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD in Animal Science, Ecology, Range Science, Engineering, or similar field completed no later than September 2022
  • Demonstrated success record publishing in peer reviewed journals
  • Experience with livestock systems and sustainability
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with project management
  • Experience managing graduate and undergraduate students in successful completion of activities
  • Experience quantifying greenhouse gas emissions
  • Experience in leading projects through to publication

    Essential Duties

    Duty/Responsibility

    This research scientist will design and execute experiments and analysis as identified through AgNext. Projects will focus on enhancing sustainability of livestock production (both confinement and extensive systems) including the implementation of new technologies, improved production efficiency, reduced enteric fermentation, enhanced animal health as well as soil, plant, animal and atmospheric interrelationships, among other areas.

    The research scientist will be responsible for project management within AgNext. This will require the research scientist to co-author grants, lead project meetings, plan manuscripts, supervise graduate students with analysis and manuscript plans, and communicate project timelines and results to collaborators. The research scientist will also be responsible for organizing research and submitting for publications. These tasks will be essential for the successful completion of projects.

    The research scientist will prepare manuscripts presenting research findings and contribute to educational activities that provide research findings about sustainable livestock production to the supply chain through conference and events, field days, short courses and/or online resources.
