Position Details

Wesleyan University's Office of Advancement (ADV) builds lifelong relationships with alumni, parents, and friends, and engages them in support of Wesleyan's educational mission and financial goals.

The Advancement team fosters pride in the Wesleyan community and develops support for university initiatives through outreach activities, including development and fundraising, alumni & parent relations, and on- and off-campus events. Wesleyan is currently in the quiet/leadership phase of a comprehensive fundraising campaign, with plans to launch publicly in 2023.

Reporting to the Director of Donor Relations, the Advancement Writer will plan, research and write a variety of communications in support of Wesleyan's ambitious fundraising goals. The Advancement Writer will play a critical role in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Wesleyan's supporters.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing, editing, and producing communications that are compelling, accurate, donor-centric, and consistent with Wesleyan's brand. These materials may include fundraising proposals and appeals, stories, reports, event collateral, and other informational materials.
  • Partnering with faculty, students, staff, and administrators throughout the University to develop compelling cases for support.
  • Writing and editing presidential correspondences, including gift acknowledgment letters and an annual state-of-the-university letter.
  • Editing and formatting scholarship and summer experience grant reports.
  • Writing Advancement reports for the Board of Trustees, and taking meeting minutes for the University Relations Committee of the Board.
  • Drafting talking points for the president, senior university leaders, and high-level volunteers.
  • Ensuring that documents are consistent in voice, well-written, appropriate in style, tone and professional in format and appearance.
  • Researching and writing campaign news stories and gift announcements.
  • Collaborating with colleagues within the Office of Advancement, as well as across campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of writing/content writing/copywriting experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

    Exceptional ability to write; and strong proficiency in English.

    Superior editing and grammar skills.

    Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment where very simple projects run side-by-side with highly complex projects.

    Strong cross-channel writing skills, including the ability to shift voice and tone based on audience and channel

    Strong organizational skills, and the ability to juggle multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines

    Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail

    Intermediate Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds

    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge of higher education and fundraising

    Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop and other Adobe Suite products
