  • Raman spectroscopy (RS) is a powerful non-invasive tool for characterization of materials. However, fluorescence effect often hampers the detectability of the relatively weak vibrational Raman signal. Several approaches will be exploited to overcome this limit. This project, in specific, will evaluate the performance of Sequentially Shifted Excitation (SSE) RS. Different laser sources RS will be used to mitigate the problems related to the fluorescence signal. In parallel, other techniques to extract Raman spectra from the fluorescent background, will be explored. At the same time, enhancement of the Raman signal with the SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) methodology will involve the use of metallic particles or layers to boost the amount of Raman scattering from molecules relevant to artworks. Special attention will be dedicated to the study of metal soaps formed as by-products in different typologies of artworks.
