Organizational Unit Overview
The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center
which is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the principal
teaching hospital for ECU. We treat more than 120,000 patients per year in a
state-of-the-art ED at Vidant Medical Center. VMC is a 960+ bed level 1 trauma
center and regional stroke center.
In the Department of Emergency Medicine, our mission is to provide and
continue to improve the quality of health care services whenever and wherever
the patient needs them; to promote scholarly activity regarding emergency
health care through education and research; and to maximize the accumulation
and utilization of resources in order to accomplish service and scholarly
activities, and promote the wellness and satisfaction of department members.
Our tertiary care catchment area includes more than 1.5 million people in
eastern North Carolina, many of whom arrive via our integrated mobile critical
care and air medical service. Our children's ED opened in July 2012 and the
children's hospital opened in June 2013. In September of 2016, we extended our
coverage to begin providing professional medical services at The Outer Banks
Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.
This advanced level of clinical position is used to extend the services of the
physicians and includes medical diagnoses and medical and surgical treatment
as directed by the physicians at Vidant Minor Emergency Department (MED)
Vidant Children's Emergency Department (CED) and Vidant Beaufort Hospital
Emergency Department (VBH). This individual will be expected to help
coordinate medical activities at MED, CED and VBH, including activities of
patient evaluation and care, as well as consulting physicians, technical, and
other medical personnel as directed by the physicians. Nurse Practitioners
applying will be expected to be trained to see patients of all ages. This
individual will be expected to work some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as
the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina
Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of
Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education
and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience
in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the
Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by
the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area
of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All
degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Candidates with urgent care or emergency department experience as well as
previous experience as a Paramedic, with eligibility for recertification as a
level one or level two Instructor.
