School/College/Division Description

WUWM has the largest public radio newsroom in southeastern Wisconsin. In addition to covering the local issues that are most important to the community, WUWM's news team runs special reporting initiatives on significant beats, including the environment, education, and race and ethnicity. Their local show and podcast, Lake Effect, brings the community local conversations about the people, places and organizations that shape Milwaukee.

Over the last three decades, WUWM has increased content creation, become more proficient at raising funds to sustain its operation, and expanded its impact on the community. WUWM won 36 awards for work produced in 2022 by the Newsroom, Lake Effect and Digital Teams. The stories and interviews were honored in competitions held by state, regional and national journalism organizations. The independent, educational mission of WUWM and its programs fuel a passionate bond with its growing listenership.

Job Summary

Reporting to the President/General Manager, the WUWM Vice-President of Operations (VPO) serves as chief facilitator of finance, administration, and compliance in advancing WUWM's mission and vision. The VPO will have responsibility for the organization's resources with direct oversight of the following units and functions: Finance, Business Operations, Engineering & Facilities, and HR/Workforce.

The VPO will lead day-to-day finance and business operations and oversee critical station functions and growth during a dynamic and changing media environment. The VPO serves on the Senior Leadership team and shares and assists in certain responsibilities with the President/GM relating to the areas of business strategy and interfacing with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, WUWM's license holder.

Supervision: Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of employees in department.

Work Location: We expect that this position will reside within WUWM's listening area. Work will be performed primarily at the Chase Tower in downtown Milwaukee, with requests for remote work considered after the initial training period. Hybrid work options may be available with specifics regarding work location requirements discussed during the interview process.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Leadership

  • In concert with executive leadership, management, and team members – develop and execute tactical plans aligned with strategic objectives, KPIs, budgets, setting and communicating clear deadlines. Ensure key execution targets are met, and lead teams to develop sophisticated solutions to challenges along the way.
  • Regularly ensures the President/GM, and other senior leaders, are up to date on all financial aspects of the company monthly and/or as requested.
  • Develops and implements an engineering and technology masterplan to ensure adaptive, operational excellence.
  • Leads and empowers cross-divisional teams for organization-wide projects. Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values leadership, collaboration, learning, relationships, and a commitment to quality.
  • Contributes to an inspirational, engaged, and community-centered culture, embracing diversity, operational excellence, team member creativity and innovation.

  • Finance & Business Operations

  • Provide oversight of day-to-day business operations and the organizational policies of WUWM, including information technology, building systems and facilities, financial operation, legal, business intelligence, human resource functions, business systems, and compliance.
  • Work in partnership with President/GM and senior leaders to create annual expense budget and revenue plans to ensure long-term financial viability for WUWM.
  • Manage financial and organizational resources to their highest and best use, maximizing the return on team members' time and value, and the organization's financial and operational resources.
  • Accountable for WUWM's business plans, ensuring they are current, tested frequently and suitable budget is set aside to deliver on them.
  • Oversee technical and engineering functions at WUWM, ensuring that the station meets and exceeds current and future operating standards.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program vice presidents; continuously collaborate with program vice presidents to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Liaise and coordinate with the UWM Foundation on business and investment accounts and associated reporting.
  • Responsible for oversight and delivery of the annual audit in a timely manner.
  • Develop and administer WUWM employee and HR policies, programs and pathways for workforce development, recruitment, and retention.
  • Key point of contact with UWM HR business partners for HR administration and liaise with UWM HR to resolve personnel issues as they arise.
  • Liaise with Chase building representatives on all building and lease matters.
  • Manage legal obligations and compliance issues, including with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
  • Undertakes special project, reports, and duties as needed.
  • Engagement

  • Attend and engage in WUWM Advisory Board and Committee meetings, donor and station functions, and community events as a leader representing WUWM.
  • Engages in various industry meetings, actively representing WUWM and providing leadership to various initiatives as appropriate.
  • Participate in fundraising activities as required including pledge drives, grants, and major donor stewardship.
  • Be a trusted counsel and act as a confidential advisor to the President/GM on matters of business policy, HR, finance, and execution, as required.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible experience managing general administrative, finance, and/or operating functions in a department or organization
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, administering, and monitoring organizational budgets and revenue plans
  • Experience overseeing technical or operational teams
  • BA/BS degree, or equivalent
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) regulations, or similar state or federal government regulatory and compliance standards
  • Experience in public broadcasting, nonprofit administration, news and public affairs reporting, governmental agency administration, and/or corporate social responsibility leadership.
  • Experience working with a university or state agency
  • Tech savvy, with clear examples of having worked with tech and operations staff to develop and implement new processes and systems
  • Keen strategic skills and the ability to execute multi-dimensional strategic thinking within an organization or business unit
  • Experience and knowledge of Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin
  • Experience working with colleagues or communities with a diverse array of perspectives and backgrounds
  • CPA and/or MBA preferred and/or equivalent experience/training
