Job Description:

The KGI Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences seeks a qualified candidate for an adjunct faculty position to teach a Transcriptomics, Biomedical Data Systems, and Bioinformatics in R course in Spring 2022. Candidates will be expected to have a strong commitment to innovative teaching in hybrid and online formats.

Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will have an MS or PhD or equivalent in a computational, biomedical, or related discipline, with up-to-date knowledge in interpreting existing and developing novel visualization approaches to derive useful conclusions from large-scale data using open-source software tools to analyze and visualize that data. Candidates with previous teaching will be given preference.

Primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Teaching ALS 411: Transcriptomics, Biomedical Data Systems and Bioinformatics in R.
  • This masters-level course focuses on exploring genome wide mRNA transcription profiles (aka transcriptomics) and other life science datasets to teach students fundamental biomedical data science principles using Python and the R software environment.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Individuals must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential function of the position or explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Proficient computer and web skills, including online learning management systems.
  • Willingness to embrace learning theories in the design and delivery of the curriculum.

  • Strong work ethic and team-based approach to working in a high-volume environment.
  • Superior writing skills.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record (as maintained by the DMV) that is acceptable to the Institute's insurance carrier.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements

    Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity is required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example, to lift or move office supplies, files, books, and packages.
