Job Description:

The University of Saint Joseph invites qualified applicants to teach a variety of courses within the Chemistry Department, serving as temporary adjunct faculty in our undergraduate (in person on the West Hartford, CT campus) and graduate (fully online, remote) programs.

The Chemistry Department in the School of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education offers BS and MS degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The undergraduate program serves chemistry and biochemistry majors as well as pre- health professions majors. The fully online MS programs cater to a variety of students, including secondary educators and chemical professionals.

Applicants will be considered for both lecture and laboratory courses. Successful candidates will be qualified to teach in one or more of the following subject areas:

  • For our online graduate programs: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Forensics, Medicinal Biosynthesis, Biochemistry of Obesity and Diabetes Chemistry, other related areas can be considered
  • For our in person undergraduate programs: General Chemistry Laboratory, Nursing Chemistry Laboratory.
  • Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Develop and/or update a course syllabus
  • Prepare lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments
  • Grade all student assignments in a timely manner. Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours; Adjunct must be available a minimum of one additional hour per week, either in-person or virtually, to provide support to students
  • Attend program/department meetings as requested
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the current methods and practices for teaching college-level courses; present qualified and clear instruction related to the course subject
  • Learn and utilize technology offered at USJ to facilitate teaching
  • Meet all designated class periods in the semester as dictated by the academic calendar
  • Submit mid-semester and final grades to the Registrar's Office within required timeframes, Leave all course records with the department chairperson upon completion of the course
  • Build a positive rapport with students and faculty and promote an environment of student success at USJ
  • All adjunct offers are contingent on sufficient enrollment. Courses are offered in a variety of formats including in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online. Courses are offered at various times, including day, evening, weekdays, and Saturdays. Please indicate in your cover letter your general availability.


  • Adjuncts at the University of Saint Joseph are required to have a minimum of a Master's Degree in a related field. Industry experience, a terminal degree, and/or prior college level teaching experience is preferred.
