The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SSBS) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of New England (UNE) seeks applications for an adjunct professor to teach sections of SOC 150 Introduction to Sociology in the Spring 2023 semester (Jan 18 – May 12, 2023). The lecture-based course will meet face-to-face on the Biddeford, Maine campus. The sections are scheduled to meet either on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00–9:20am, and Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30-10:50am.

Course Description. The SOC 150 course introduces students to the concepts and methods of sociology, particularly as they are applied to an understanding of problems and structure in society. Topics include the social organization of the U.S. as well as other countries around the world. Emphasis is on global experiences around the world and on the causes and implications of social and cultural change.

It is anticipated that this class will be comprised of a blend of lecture and active learning approaches. The adjunct professor will be responsible for development and delivery of the content of the course, grading all assessment materials (e.g., exams, quizzes), calculation and submission of final class grades, and holding at least one office hour on campus per week. Program and University identified learning objectives and student learning outcomes will be provided for the course.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities include:

  • Updating a course syllabus (sample syllabi and course materials are available)
  • Presenting instruction aligned with the student learning outcomes of the course.
  • Preparing student assignments that assess the learning outcomes
  • Meeting during all designated class periods.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Submitting mid-semester progress reports and final grades by University deadlines.

  • Qualifications

    A master's degree in sociology or a related field is required; candidates with a Ph.D. and/or college teaching experience are preferred.
