    Position description

    The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a dynamic, self- motivated individual committed to process improvement who is flexible and forward-thinking to serve as Metadata and Acquisitions Law Librarian. Under the general supervision of the Head of Collection Services, this position oversees all aspects of acquisitions and supervises at least two members of the department. This position is responsible for the Law Library's collection budget, working closely with the department head on forecasting, administration, and analysis.

    Position Description Supervision • Manages all acquisitions activities and directly supervises Library Assistants with duties that include ordering, handling invoices, and processing new materials. • Supervises daily work of Student Workers who assist the department with processing, withdrawing, and special projects. • Develops training and documentation. • Manages departmental communications and workflows when the Head of Collections Services is absent. Metadata • Performs original and complex copy cataloging for all formats of legal materials, in coordination with others in the department. Acquisitions • Manages acquisitions processes: orders in Alma and vendor systems, including payments; receipts and claims; fiscal close and rollover in Alma. • Coordinates research and resolution of order and payment issues with vendors. • Manages vendor information in all relevant systems, including systems managed by the Libraries and by other campus departments. • Ensures timely public access to information about new resources, in coordination with Department Head and others as needed. Policy Setting, Assessment, and Documentation • In consultation with Department Head as needed, establishes policies and procedures to maintain accurate records for complex, continuously updated legal materials in print and electronic formats. • Participates in ongoing implementation and improvement processes for the UCI Libraries' Library Systems Platform. • Develops and maintains documentation for assigned functional areas and participates in the maintenance of department-wide documentation. Analyzes and improves overall acquisitions workflows by leading training sessions and supervising the implementation of changes. • Assists in analyzing and reporting for collection-maintenance activities. Monitors balances, subscriptions, orders, and memberships. Other • Participates in collection development activities as assigned. • Participates in supporting public-facing library services by working shifts at the front desk or reference desk. • Collaborates with all librarians to design, develop, and maintain the Law Library's online presence. • Participates actively and collaboratively on library committees, task forces, and project teams as appropriate. • Participates in professional organizations outside the library and in university and public service, and engages in research and creative activity in order to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion. • Develops and maintains awareness of current developments in the fields of law, library science, legal technology, and legal research, to enhance performance in primary position responsibilities. • Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Required • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution. • Knowledge and experience with purchasing in an academic library. • Demonstrated fluency with common office applications for collaboration, documentation, and reporting, including intermediate spreadsheet skills, or the ability to develop fluency. • Excellent organizational and time management skills, and effectiveness in balancing and completing multiple assignments and projects. • Demonstrated initiative and flexibility. Ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member. • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Preferred • Three or more years of acquisitions or related experience in law libraries. • One or more years of experience with acquisitions or electronic resource management in the Alma library services platform from Ex Libris. • Leadership skills, demonstrated by supervisory experience, project management experience, or other types of relevant experience.

    Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month of sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 45% of salary.

    Librarians at UCI are academic appointees. Non-managerial librarians are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This is a represented position.

Librarians periodically receive administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside the Library; 3) university and public service; and 4) research and other creative activity.
