James Madison University (JMU) seeks applicants for the position of Head of
the Department of Engineering. The JMU Department of Engineering is a
community of educators, striving to enable its diverse faculty, staff, and
students to achieve broad successes in teaching and learning, scholarship and
entrepreneurship, and service to others. The department offers an ABET-
accredited BS degree in engineering. Anchored in the liberal arts through the
university's general education program, JMU's engineering major is
characterized by experiential learning of engineering as an intradisciplinary
practice, and the major culminates in a two-year-long engineering project
experience. The vision of the department is to nurture project-ready engineers
who know how to make things happen, an approach recognized in national
rankings and national networks for engineering education. The department
currently has 16 full-time faculty members representing many different
engineering disciplines, approximately 450 students, and six support staff.
Its strengths include dedicated faculty and staff; an engaged and invested
student body and alumni; strong administrative and lab support; and well-
equipped laboratories and design studios. JMU prizes collaboration among
academic units and provides unique opportunities for intradisciplinary, team-
based teaching and scholarship, with a strong focus on undergraduate research

Duties and Responsibilities
The Head of the Department is responsible for the academic unit's program
administration and strategic leadership, and reports to the Dean of the
College of Integrated Science and Engineering.
Successful candidates will be accomplished educators and scholars with
potential for success in:
Fostering inclusive workplace and learning cultures;
Implementing the department's strategic vision in the evolving landscape of higher education; and
Representing the department, both internally at JMU and externally to industry, prospective students, academic peers, etc.
A PhD in an engineering discipline or related field is required as is
experience commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
Conditions of Employment
Per the Governor's Executive Directive #18, new JMU employees upon hire must
disclose to the University Health Center their COVID-19 vaccination status.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding
campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime
prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting
policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of
students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and
other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report
includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes
that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property
owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or
immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire
statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-
campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills
held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable
electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and
procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with
other fire safety information.
The JMU Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes the Harrisonburg
