Ecosystem - Microbiome Research

Ulm University with its more than 10,000 students offers varied professional tasks in a highly innovative research, teaching and work environment, at the same time facilitating the reconciliation of work and family in many ways.

We seek to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and particularly encourages qualified female scientists to apply for this position.

In an interdisciplinary team consisting of a post- doc and two PhD students, the project examines how different fertilisation regimes affect the functional biodiversity of microbiomes along a grassland trophic chain. The PhD's focus in the Schäfer lab will be on the functional analyses of plant root and flower microbiomes in interaction with animals. At the Institute of Molecular Botany, we are an interactive and international team that has established international collaborations in the field of functional microbiomics to investigate the effect of beneficial symbionts on nutrient supply (with groups from the University of Warwick, UK) and resistance to climate stress (with groups from the University of Colima, Mexico) in plants. All IMPALA-project partners study at the University of Ulm (Profs. Sommer and Wilfert, Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Genomics, as well as Prof. Riedel, Microbiology).
