    We offer a 3-year full-time position to generate and test a new generation of antibiotics, so-called non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) or antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). This project is part of the Doctoral Network Stop Spread Bad Bugs ( SSBB ) funded by Horizon Europe-MSCA.

    SSBB is focused on the discovery of novel antimicrobial approaches to reduce multidrug resistant bacteria . The consortium consists of 13 leading European R &D laboratories from universities, industries, and technology institutes in the domain of drug development, infectiology, immunology and pharmacology, which are locat ed in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland.

    SSBB will provide the PhD students with a comprehensive set of theoretical and practical skills relevant for innovation and long-term employability in a rapidly growing sector. This highly innovative training will cover several inter-disciplinary areas. Each PhD student will be enrolled in a doctoral programme and will have two official employers, one from academia and one from industry. Highly qualified personnel from both employers will jointly coach the PhD student.

    DC1 will be hosted at Inbiose and University Utrecht; DC2 will be hosted at SetLance and University I Stavanger; DC3 will be hosted at University I Stavanger and SetLance; DC4 will be hosted at Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia and SetLance

    Benefits

    3-year full-time employment contract will be issued in accordance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) regulations for Doctoral Candidates; the contracts will be 18 months at each hosting institute.

    The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for doctoral candidates. This includes a living allowance EUR 39,700- 52,00 annually, (this is a variable amount, based on an automatically calculated adjustment assuming the expected cost of living in the country of recruitment) and an additional mobility allowance (EUR 7200 per person per year). If applicable, a family allowance (Maximum of EUR 660 per person per year) will be paid. Please note that all compulsory national contributions (social security, pension, insurances, taxes etc.) to be borne by the employer and employee shall be deducted from the abovementioned amounts in line with MCSA Rules. These deductions vary between countries and institutes.

    Eligibility criteria

    Candidates must not hold a doctoral degree and be in the first four years of their research career. For the PhD positions the EU ‘Mobility rules' apply. This means that candidate students cannot have resided for more than 12 months during the period of 3 years immediately before the start of the PhD, in the prospective first host country (Example: a candidate who has stayed in The Netherlands for more than 12 months in the last 3 years cannot be hired for the position where the first placement is at the university in The Netherlands).

    STOP SPREAD BAD BUGS is a new multi-disciplinary research/training consortium built to combat the alarming problem of global antimicrobial resistance. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) in bacteria is becoming increasingly common thus urgently calling for alternative approaches to develop and implement novel antibiotics. We envision a definitive solution that will require a paradigm shift. Its foundation shall be the training of a new generation of future 15 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) by world-renowned experts in the field of drug development, infectiology, immunology and pharmacology. A unique state-of the- art teaching/training pipeline shall be developed across academic and industrial partners with complementary expertise in the development and testing of novel approaches to antimicrobial therapy in humans. We shall establish knowledge and expertise on carbohydrate and protein chemistry for the discovery of new drug candidates, while characterizing the underlying mechanism of existing compounds for treatment of microbial infections. Computational modelling shall optimize the interactions of the novel entities with selected pathogens. A range of infection models allows partners to simultaneously determine compound efficacy in pre-clinical settings and investigate the potential effects of the novel antimicrobials on host tissues. State-of-the-art imaging tools will be applied to track the bacteria and novel compounds in these test systems. Uniquely, the pipeline will also determine the pharmacokinetics, and the effects of compounds on host microbiota and host immunity. Understanding the mechanisms of action of the novel antimicrobials shall provide insights into new antimicrobial mechanisms, which may be further exploited in spin-off projects. This approach means that the STOP SPREAD BAD BUGS consortium will deliver uniquely trained, multi- and interdisciplinary DCs that will take the continuing fight against global MDR safely into the future.

    Skills/Qualifications

    DC#1: MSc degree or equivalent in Bioscience Engineering, (Bio)Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology and related disciplines. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. You have hands-on experience in molecular biology, biocatalysis, protein production and fermentation and knowledge of carbohydrates, glycobiology, protein engineering and bioinformatics is a plus. You are proficient in data analysis and visualisation (R, python,) and knowledge of scientific software and tools for gene design, cloning, sequence analysis and structure analysis is advantageous.

    DC#2: MSc degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Organic Chemistry, and related disciplines. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. Previous experience in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, mechanism of action of antibiotics/antimicrobials, models of infections as well as proficiency in using scientific software packages such as Windows Office, Google app, GraphPad etc. are advantageous.

    General: In addition to the formal Research Fellow qualifications, selection is also based on the performance of the candidates in other works (e.g. thesis and advanced level courses), as well as through interviews and assignments.
