Position Overview

Primary Purpose of the Position

The University College Writing Program is seeking Adjunct Faculty for the 2022-2023 academic year. The successful candidates will be responsible for preparing and teaching courses in Writing Composition. Adjunct Faculty will report directly to the Writing Program Coordinator under the Director of the Writing and Communication Center and the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education and Dean of University College (UC). Adjunct Faculty will prepare and teach courses in college level writing that integrate instruction in writing, reading, and study skills and participate in assessment activities for the WSSU Writing Program.

Minimum Experience/Education

Master's Degree or higher in Education, English, Composition, Developmental Education, Reading, Adult Education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. • One year or more of experience in teaching college level writing and/or reading.

Normal Work Schedule

University Hours – Monday – Friday; Some evening hours may be required.

• Graduate course work in teaching adult education, composition, developmental studies or linguistics. • Experience integrating both reading and writing skills in a meaningful context for precollege-level learners. • Experience working with and teaching students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from diverse backgrounds, abilities and learning styles. • Experience using a variety of technology and tools both in and out of the classroom including Early Warning Systems and LMS (i.e. EAB Navigate, Canvas, etc.)

  • Competency in teaching a variety of courses with an emphasis on English composition and/or college reading skills.
  • Professional and courteous interactions with students, faculty, and staff, including providing consistent feedback of student progress in Early Alert systems.
  • Ability to work directly with students and advisors to provide necessary interventions for student success.
  • Flexibility in the instructional and general responsibilities of the position.
  • Dynamic, non-traditional delivery methods for teaching students in widely
  • varying levels of proficiency and from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles with ideas of equity mindedness and social justice as important cornerstones of teaching style.
  • Experience using computers as an instructional aid in and out of the classroom to enhance learning.
  • Ability to work independently, but also contribute in a team situation.
  • An appreciation of diversity and the benefits of a commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace.
  • Excellent customer service skills including establishing, building, and maintaining internal/external customer satisfaction. Ability to hold up to 8 office hours per week (2 hours per 3- hour credit course).
  • Good ethical conduct, reliability and integrity. Ability to work in a face-to-face teaching modality. Attendance to writing faculty meetings is required; attendance at unit meetings is strongly encouraged.
