ÅAU invites applications for a fixed-term (24 months) Project Researcher position starting 1.1.2022 , or as soon as possible thereafter as agreed. The position is full time and located at the subject Environmental and Marine Biology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering in Åbo/Turku, Finland. The work will be carried out at the subject Environmental and Marine Biology in close collaboration with the project partners in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, and Denmark. Experimental research will be conducted at ÅAU's marine field station Archipelago Centre Korpoström, two hours southwest of Turku in the heart of the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO).

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

The researcher will be employed within the BiodivERsA project BaltVib: Pathogenic Vibrio bacteria in the current and future Baltic Sea waters: mitigating the problem funded by the Academy of Finland and the European Union. BiodivERsA is a network of national and regional funding organizations promoting pan-European research on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and offering innovative opportunities for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity. BiodivERsA is funded under the Horizon 2020 ERA- NET Cofund scheme. The BaltVib project is transdisciplinary and divided into 5 work packages that each will employ a researcher or PhD candidate.

Vibrio bacteria are microbes in the natural plankton of the coastal ocean. Yet, several Vibrio species are human pathogens. It is hence of great concern that Vibrio -related wound infections and fatalities have increased along Baltic Sea coasts, probably stimulated by ocean warming. Future climate change may escalate this problem, posing a threat to human health and tourism industry. Yet, projections neglect the influence of ecosystem engineers such as mussels and macrophytes, that may regulate Vibrio abundance in coastal habitats, as recent findings suggest. BaltVib aims to delineate the Vibrio status, determine biotic and abiotic key factors regulating Vibrio , and elucidate the option for nature-based solution strategies to control pathogenic Vibrios in nearshore Baltic habitats where humans interact with the sea. This will be accomplished through interdisciplinary integration of marine, microbiological, molecular and socio- ecological expertise from seven Baltic nations.

Main responsibilities

You will work primarily in WP3 of BaltVib : Projected Vibrio - ecosystem engineer relations coordinated by ÅAU. In a newly established mesocosm system at ÅAU , you will be able to manipulate parameters identified as main drivers of in situ Vibrio prevalence in Baltic waters in the presence and absence of ecosystem engineers. Data were already collected in a 2021-Baltic-wide sampling campaign and treatment manipulations may encompass temperature, salinity, water column nutrients, and allochthonous carbon. In particular, simplified benthic hard- and soft-bottom community assemblages will be tested with or without blue mussels ( Mytilus spp.), macrophytes ( Fucus vesiculosus ) and eelgrass ( Zostera marina ), all abundant and important ecosystem engineers in most parts of the Baltic. Bacterioplankton will be analyzed, and pathogenic and non-pathogenic subgroups will be identified in collaboration with the BaltVib partner institutions. In addition, collaboration with national authorities such as Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), Finland will be fostered on Vibrio monitoring and analyses in Finnish water.

For this position, you are required to work a total of 1,612 hours per year. The work tasks will be defined in detail in an annual work plan. A trial period applies to new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

As applicant you must hold a PhD degree in marine (aquatic) ecology or biology or microbiology/ecology or in a related discipline. The following qualifications also apply:

  • Knowledge of experimental (stress) ecology and experimental research, preferably in small- to large-scale mesocosm systems
  • We welcome expertise in microbial ecology of marine (aquatic) systems
  • Experience in ecological field work (e.g., seagrass, macrophytes, invertebrates)
  • Scientific diving skills are welcome but not mandatory
  • Cross-disciplinarity, in particular experience in collaboration with different stakeholder groups
  • Fluency in English is required for this position
  • We are looking for an applicant who has high motivation for doing research, enjoys being part of a multicultural and cross-disciplinary team and capable of working independently, also in remote settings. The successful applicant will be appointed following a general assessment of their competence and potential for development according to the tasks and prerequisites of the position.

    SALARY

    The salary for a Project Researcher will be based on level 5 of the job demand level for teaching and research personnel in accordance with the Finnish University salary system, https: // www. sivista.fi/wp- content/uploads/2020/04/Salary-Scales-010820-and-010621.pdf. In addition, there is a salary component based on personal work performance, according to the general collective agreement for universities.
